There are some great custom makers out there...but yes, it is true--you have to pay to play.

What do you guys think the cost of razors like that go for ?

Well, I would say that the MINIMUM for any custom razor would be $350...for a damascus, you're probably going to approach $600...For the ones in the picture, you're going to be up near $1000, I imagine. Especially that second one.
I priced some basic custom razors from Robert Williams not too long ago, and they were running $350-$375, and when I asked about damascus, he said add $150.

All the little touches--filing, handle material, etc., add to the price. But man, you're buying ART, so who can complain?

Customs are deadly habit. I remember thinking WOW..I COULD NEVER...

That was 8 custom razors ago...

They sure are pretty and theres something about having a hand made product...rather than a mass produced one :)

A cheaper opportunitiy is to customize a vintage razor. The price range is there beginnig at 50,- $. But if you want scales from mammoth ivory it also can go up much higher.

You do know that the two razors you posted pictures of are custom...right?

I'm not familiar with Frank Warners, but Joe Chandler is pretty well known around the Foums for very, very good work.

Well Im talking about how one person makes them...

A Chandler is made by Joe...A Zowada by Tim...Livi by the Mastro....Usually from start to finish and grind and all that. They dont have a box of 200 blanks and work from that. I know each person might use a different heat treater and all that...but you know what im getting at :)

You guys are terrible, I just wanted to shave. I didnt want this to be another hobby to keep me broke, I never thought this couls happen, but Im not going to be happy intill I own a custom and I have to say Im really liking what I have seen from Joe Chandler. Now I have those others to links to look at that were posted.

I shoot in pistol and rifle competitions, I just had a precision rifle built that I have $7,000 into, that is wih scope included. My addiction for firearms is out of control. I also have a problem with Jeeps and motorcycles. Now the custom razor thing , Everytime I get into something it turns into something being custom. What is with me and custom, I should have never started looking at these razors. ok I need to figure out what Im going to do . I would imagine there is some kind of wait time when you have a custom razor built. Like everything else I have there is always a wait. I waited 2 years to have a custom flintlock built, a year to have another rifle built, 2 years for this .45 I ordered. There's more but I rambled on enough here.

Anyway thanks for the damm help everyone, with the links and all.

I am having a custom made at the moment. I was lucky and got in with a new maker early in his career. He wanted to test his skills, so he asked me to design a razor as if I was really a customer to see if he could pull it off.

I must say I think he can! Now I really am his customer :D

There is something very exciting about spec-ing a razor to your own requirements. Yeah it costs a bit more, but you get exactly what you (think you) want!

Mike, I'm really flattered at your kind words about my work. I'm always looking to improve. One thing to remember about pricing is that the maker usually isn't making all that. The purveyor/vendor/reseller usually ups the price a lot. I'm still making about what I made when I got started. lol

Joe , Thanks for the reply, I definitly would like to own one of your customs. I' would like to discuss a design and pricing with you and see some pics if possible. It also possible that one of your customs could be out of my league. Do you deal with customers direct or does one purchase through a vendor?
