Though not an American, I'm a registered Ever-readublican rather than GemOcrat. I'm new to SE shaving (thanks to Spinyeel for some Blue Star Gem blades). About a month or more. As he and others have mentioned, you will need to stick with it, don't lose heart. There are so many differences between it and DE technique and idosyncracies. I also notice blade life (shave life) is much less than what I can get from DE blades. I will be getting some different blades to try out. I doubt I will ever be a SE only shaver. I will though, always have my 1912 SE 'ever-ready' to go.
I get my best shaves from a slant and a GEM razor. It takes a while until you learn how to use it right(both) but the shaves with them are great. Its worthy to take a couple days to learn the right technique for them.
Advantages to SE shaving: it's super-fast and nick & irritation free when I use my featherweight. It's super slow when I use my open comb micromatic, but the shave is very close. Disadvantages: SE blades last 3 or less days for me. The o.c. micromatic shreds my face if I'm not careful. As for the wtg pass is a wtg pass statement: are you saying that all DEs are the same, or that all straights are the same? I've never used a straight, but it stands to reason that the shave would be closer since there's no separation between your face and the blade. Try an open comb micromatic and then compare that against a Tech. You'll notice a difference. I think the difference between straights and DEs would be similar. (not exact, similar)
I was going to point that out before and did not.. A more agressive razor shaves different then a mild one. a straight.. and I have used them.. is even closer. To say that a wtg is a wtg. is not correct at all. A SE is the best fastest way . in my opinion.. to get a comfortable good close shave. Just like anything else it take learning the technique.
Hiya, Sheeeeesh! What a damn bunch of enablers! After a number of years resisting these things, I bought a Gem a few days ago. Yeah, it's a very common 1912 version with a fairly plain handle. The thing's in great shape..........stupid thing called to me. No plans to try it out and no plans on even buying any blades yet. Man, I was surprised when I bought this goofy thing. I keep reading about how great they shave, and well.........who knows. I may give it a shot sometime. I blame you............ Martin
You're the one who knew he had RAD and yet walked within a mile radius of a razor-purchasing location. And yes, I can confirm your observation that SEs make great conversation partners. Especially at 0Dark30. :happy102
Hi there, I appreciate your nice offer, but I'm gonna pass on those for now. Heh.......I'm not quite ready to head down ANOTHER rabbit hole...... yet. Thank you though, Martin
ANY razor can and will bite you if you use poor technique, drive it w/o paying attention, or have a klutz moment. I have found that even with 2 razors that appear exactly alike, there are subtle differences in the shave. Take time to learn it and the SE makes for a good BBS day
Yep, I did willingly put myself at risk.....heh. The thing is, I've seen lots of those silly SE thingys and never actually purchased one. Hell, I rarely even pick those up to get a feel for em. I've seen em with all sorts of handles and designs, but always walked on by. It's reading everyone's posts about how wonderful these are...............that's what finally pushed me off the fence. It's that constant barrage by y'all(sad eh?). Yes, I am weak....... Martin
:happy102 That southern bunch! Gotta watch them! They'll have us munching mudbugs and wanting to watch gator wraslin on Sat night!
