    • Brush:VDH Boar
    • Razor:RR modified/hybrid Superadjustable
    • Blade:Astra (Shave #1)
    • A/S: Thayers with peppermint EO followed by Iced Subzero

Just checking on a few things for my travel pack... Himmm... the Tabac mini stick (small glue stick recycled) may be too mini... I *might* be able to get three heavily lathered days out of it. Oh well, better re-fill the dent I just made.

I use the slim adjustable set to 7 and it gives real good shaves but nothing close to the SE Gems. I think at the end of Week of DE, I can honestly say that the Slim Adjustable and the Tech may make occassional appearances during the week but my go to razors will probably always be SE. There simply is not a double edge out there that will match their aggressiveness. My next major DE experiment will be with one of the old style Gillette Open Comb 3 pieces. Up to now, I'm just not horribly impressed with any DE. I'll take a Gem or an Ever Ready any day.

  4. Ok...got it,

It would make sense the slim will be lots more aggressive than a Tech when it's set on 7. Yeah, even with a sharp blade, the Tech won't be as aggressive as you seem to prefer.

You're smart to think of trying the various OC types, and those will probably do the trick. For me, they all shave closer and with more bite to em than the other type. I know it's a desirable feature that many members prefer, but they just don't do it for me. You'll find the way the blade is presented to your face will feel different as well. They can be really effective, but not always the most comfortable razors. Depends on what your face has to say......heh.

One question, will a heavier Tech render more aggressive shaves? The one I was using has a small bakelite handle and weighs next to nothing would a fat metal handle make a difference or is the mild shave more a product of the head design (which would be the same regardless of the handle)?

There were several different tech heads/handles over the years. My favorite is the one that has the cap like a new but the diamond depression in the base with the safety bar. Paired with the fatty tech handle (same dimensions as the NEW bar handle) it is my favorite tech. On the other end of the extreme is the lightweight aluminum techs with tabs at the edge to align the blade. These are the ones that I find extremely mild and don't keep.

More than anything, what determines how aggressively a razor will shave is its blade exposure.

You can have an open-combed, heavy razor with a mild fixed head and you won't get aggressive shaves.

It's a popular misconception that open-comb razors shave more aggressively than closed-; it's false and, to reiterate, a razor's aggression, above all factors, lays in blade exposure.

Superlather has no merit IMO, but if I had some Glycerin I would have doubtless whipped up an Uber-Lather.

Still want a scuttle - has anyone created a makeshift one using two inexpensive Walmart/Target bowls? If so, let me know the combo!

Do they keep lather pleasantly hot (like the output from a hotlather machien) or are they overrated?

Your skin can get frostbite from this Permafrost Blue soap--it is a menthol explosion when you whip up your lather. The Floid Classic has a little more cooling to it than Mennen Skin Bracer, and smells much nicer, at least to me. ;) :D

  18. Hi there,

Heh, wanna see that YMMV thingy in all it's glory? I've had the opposite results as you when it comes to OC types.

Of the 7-8 open comb razors used so far, each has been more aggressive than my fatboy when set on #3. I realize that number is on the low end of the shaving scale, but it's a good reference point for what I'm getting at. Most closed combs like later model Aristocrats and Diplomats feel like a solid #5, which is just a little too much for regular use.

Saying that, all the OC types have been at least as aggressive as those........most have been more so. There's only a couple that felt like a 5, and others seemed even higher(the Bulldog comes to mind).

I've read a fair bit about open combs, and it seems to me that most members will consider them more aggressive than other types. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's the feeling I have.

I think there's more to these things than the blade gap being wider.
I'm convinced the way the blade is presented to my face is also another important addition to the mix. Yeah, the angle is often different as well with an OC type, and it affects how the blade cuts.

Anyway, just another person heard from.......heh.
