Damn i just stuffed up my fat boy razor it was bit dirty so i took a pot put some vinegar and mixed water in it and left it to boil in the water , can you believe it it my razor went black now i am so cross and up set with my self i could scream and hit myslef. Do you maybe know how i can restore it back to its original color?
It was the vinegar. Boiling a Fat Boy in plain water will hurt nothing. You're going to have to use some metal polish to get it back to silver in color. I like NevRDull, others recommend Maas. It will take some work to revive it.
Hi thanks for your input i will have to go find some metal polish as we dont have those products that you mentioned here in South Africa , we do have products called Silvo and Braso will that work? Thanks Willy
As long as they state they are safe for nickel they should be fine. I've heard of Brasso in the states, never used it though.
Sorry to hear about that Fatboy! I agree with Chris, it sounds to me like dumping it in the vinegar accelerated years and years worth of tarnish instantly. I'm not sure what sort of metal polish is available to you there in South Africa, but Maas, Flitz, and Blue Magic are some that come to mind off hand. Maybe check a local auto parts store for some. Good luck and keep us posted how it turns out.... EDIT: well, I see you already touched on what I posted while I was typing it....
i will go read up on the brasso see if its suite table for the nickel , if i cant restore it, do you sagest i have it re plated ?
the brasso says its good for . brass, copper , pewter , stainless steel and zinc. do you think its safe to use?
i will try some just now going to use some all purpose cleaner first see what that will do to the razor
DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER !!! DO NOT USE BRASSO... Brasso is a known Nickel killer and will very gladly strip your fatboy of all the Nickel to expose the brass underneath. I repeat DO NOT USE BRASSO. Try doing a search for "Brasso" on this and other forums like B&B and SMF to know the sad tales of people unknowingly using Brasso to do a clean up job on their Nickel plated razors.
I'd say that Brasso would be too abrasive, Silvo might be OK, check too see if it is OK for nickel plate. I use a polish called Peek, available in the UK, maybe you can find something similar? Another thing you might try, if you are brave enough, is to boil the razor again, this time line the pot with aluminium foil and put in a small spoon of baking soda. Good luck. Pete
From what I have read the alu foil + bake soda is good for blackened silver objects. Has anyone tried this for Nickel as well ?
Any polish for sterling silver will be safe and work on your razor. Believe it or not, you can also use toothpaste. Either way, lots and lots of elbow grease will be required. But its worth it!
I hope this works out okay for you, Willy. I'm kind of disheartened here because it seems like I read a forum member telling you to use vinegar and water to clean it in another post, although I can't find it now. In fairness, it may have been on another forum but I don't read other forums much.
HI ERIC hows things i got my Fat Boy looking almost brand spanking new thanks to some input of the members here on TSD , it took a bit of elbow grease but its very shiny (the head) all thats left now is for me the shine up the rest of it , luckily the handle did not even change to black like the head , it just went a bit dull , but i will make it all shiny soon. Once a again thanks alot guys Willy
