Hello, I noticed some talk about DE shaving in another forum I frequent. My research brought me here and I have lurked for one weekend and registered to get more out of the site features. I found a shop a couple of hours away and on the way to my vacation spot next weekend. They are a small local dealer and are willing to open the shop for me on a Saturday when I pass through. They seem to have a good choice of the Merkur razors, which will probaby be my first. They also offer a wide selection other related items. I'll let you know how it turns out. I am also open to any recommendations. I have been shaving for 23 or so years. I started with plastic disposables and currently bounce between the shick quattro and Power M3. I have relatively sensitive skin on my face and often get ingrown hairs. I like very smooth shave. I think I end up running the razor in too many passes and for too many shaves. My wife complains about the high cost of my cartridges. I am hoping I can reduce the reoccurring costs, add a little time, and have a better shave. Thanks Mike
Hello Mike,Welcome to TSD!You can find a lot of good DE razors on ebay or antiquaries where you live.A Gillette Super Speed razor is always good for a beginner into the DE world. Also a Merkur 33C or 34 C could be great too.You can get some blade sample packs for several retailers online.I know that BullGoose and West Coat shaving have them a pretty affordable prices. For creams and soaps you have TSD store here.JoAnna makes finest soaps and creams but theres others soap makers on the forum like Kells soaps. For a cheap brush you can always get the VDH boar brush to start and also a Tweezerman badger brush.Another great option is a Semogue boar brush. You can save a lot of money with DE shaving unless that you acquire any AD(acquisition disorder for soaps, creams, razors and so on)Dont worry if you are hit by one, they cant be cure so enjoy it as it last!Hope also that you enjoy the forums.
Glad to have you here Mike. A Merkur HD or classic would be a good place to start. Blades are trial and error, though. There is a huge difference between brands in longevity, sharpness, quality control, etc. Good luck!

Mike, Welcome to the den. I am not a high poster but visit a lot. The den members are a great bunch. I have learned tons in my short tenure here. Where is this shop you speak of. I have yet to visit a true shaving brick and mortar store. Would be interested in knowing if there is one in VT. Thanks, Phil
Hey, wellcome to TSD n_n Although you will recieve several great advises here, lemme share my starter experience: When getting a Sample pack of blades, check the brands you get in the pack and not the amount of blades. Some brands pack 10 blades and others 5 so if you see "60 blades" that could be from 6 to 12 brands
