Well as you are in the UK, get either a british tech, a british NEW or NEW Improved, a british HD Rocket or regular Rocket or Rocket Super speed.
Or get a british made single edge Ever-Ready or GEM.

All the made in USA gillettes are very expensive over there, but a british tech, new or ever-ready/GEM can be bought for less than £5 on fleabay.
The rockets £20+ and aristocrats £50+ are a lot more expensive.

If you don't want a vintage razor from ebay/antique shop, then most people start off the with german made Merkur, a #23, #33, #34 etc.

edit: I think if you are already straight shaving, the GEM or Ever-ready single edge (SE) is the best for you. Dirt cheap, like £3 and blades can be bought from connaught shaving for them. The GEM by personna or ted pella stainless steel ones are the best. The treets, PALs and Looks aren't too good.

Reallly good answer Pablo!.British Rockets are great razors and hopefully you would be able to find them there. Also british techs are good shavers too.
You can get a sample blade pack from Connaught shaving to try the ones that could work better for you.
Also the GEM/Ever Ready razors are great options if you are looking for a close shave(almost like a straight shaving)The 1912 and the GEM Micromatic are the most famous ones among those.
Hope you can find the right one/s for you and enjoy it/them:D

Good advice on razors above. Be sure to get a sample pack of blades. You can get a great shave from any razor in good condition with good technique and the right blade. You'll find blade choice very personal and it will vary from razor to razor. That is some blades will work great in one razor and not well at all in another razor. The only blade that is disliked enough I would avoid it is Merkur (just the blades, the razors are fine).

  5. I agree with the choices of a British Tech or Rocket. These are great razors to start with, especially the Tech.

If you want to buy new, then the Merkur HD, or even a Futur, would be a good choice.

    Have fun shaving.

I really can't add much to this discussion except to express my love of Rockets again. :D

As I am no friend of the old gillettes (or the new ones ) I would give the advice to buy a new Merkur razor or maybe on of the new series Parker razors (89R,91R)..
