Was this a good buy?

I'm not a collector, but today I bought a couple of safety razors at a local antique store. I'm pretty sure one is almost brand new. It is a Merkur open comb. It is so shiny it doesn't look like it has been used, and there is no evidence that it has ever had soap on it. I paid $3.50 for it.

The other is older. It is a Gillette. I came in a little brass box with the words 'Razor -n- Blades' on it. Around the edge of the box were engraved leaves. In the lid of the box there is a mirror. Inside I found a three piece very short handled (travel?) razor. It is about 95% in condition. The marks on it were a 'k' and '3'. The handle has a ball on the bottom. I paid $5.00 for it.

    Did I get taken?
Does anybody know how old the little Gillette is?

    Thanks for your replies.

The Merkur is a great razor and for that price its a bargain(specially for a vintage one)
The Gillette, well I dont know about it cuz I havent seen what model its but for that price you cant go wrong either.K3 is the date code(when the razor was made) and acording to this list:http://www.geocities.com/safetyrazors/gil_ser2.htm yours its a tech and its from the 3rd quarter of 1965.

sol92258 I have no earthly idea

you just about can't get "taken" for any razor $5 or less...as long as you inspect them and find them to be in acceptable condition

The other razor is a Gillette travel Tech.

Most likely a steal on both. At those prices, anything in usable condition is a deal.

    +1

Around me, I'm lucky to find anything for under $10, and usually just over, depending on the condition...

Techs are good shavers, and that seems like a fair price, given that they're not real rare or anything like that. And a vintage Merkur at that price is a bargain!

A vintage Merkur for that kinda price is definitely a bargain provided that it is in good condition.

I'll try and get some photographs up later. I've been working way too much the past two weeks: 12-14 hours each day. Actually, the trip to the antique shop was a mid-day mild diversion to try and take a break.

BTW, I don't think the Merkur is vintage. It just looks too clean and new.

It sounds like this Tech Traveler. "K3" is from the third Quarter 1965

That's it. The only difference is the 'Razor-n- Blades' is larger and in two lines on the one I purchased. Thanks.
