I'm not a collector, but today I bought a couple of safety razors at a local antique store. I'm pretty sure one is almost brand new. It is a Merkur open comb. It is so shiny it doesn't look like it has been used, and there is no evidence that it has ever had soap on it. I paid $3.50 for it. The other is older. It is a Gillette. I came in a little brass box with the words 'Razor -n- Blades' on it. Around the edge of the box were engraved leaves. In the lid of the box there is a mirror. Inside I found a three piece very short handled (travel?) razor. It is about 95% in condition. The marks on it were a 'k' and '3'. The handle has a ball on the bottom. I paid $5.00 for it. Did I get taken? Does anybody know how old the little Gillette is? Thanks for your replies.
The Merkur is a great razor and for that price its a bargain(specially for a vintage one) The Gillette, well I dont know about it cuz I havent seen what model its but for that price you cant go wrong either.K3 is the date code(when the razor was made) and acording to this list:http://www.geocities.com/safetyrazors/gil_ser2.htm yours its a tech and its from the 3rd quarter of 1965.
you just about can't get "taken" for any razor $5 or less...as long as you inspect them and find them to be in acceptable condition
+1 Around me, I'm lucky to find anything for under $10, and usually just over, depending on the condition...
Techs are good shavers, and that seems like a fair price, given that they're not real rare or anything like that. And a vintage Merkur at that price is a bargain!
I'll try and get some photographs up later. I've been working way too much the past two weeks: 12-14 hours each day. Actually, the trip to the antique shop was a mid-day mild diversion to try and take a break. BTW, I don't think the Merkur is vintage. It just looks too clean and new.
That's it. The only difference is the 'Razor-n- Blades' is larger and in two lines on the one I purchased. Thanks.
