I know the correct answer is "If you aren't going to do it right, don't do it." but here goes anyway. I'm going to Cub Scout camp for a week with the Den that I lead. I need to shave each day to set a good example but won't have time for the normal full brush/soap shave. My question - as long as I'm careful, would it work OK to use my DE with some canned shave cream like Barbasol? My other option is to use a disposable with the Barbasol for the week but I would prefer to not give up the DE. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
You can use your DE with anything you like - whatever works for you. If the can is what would you think would be best in that situation, go for it. I think the Barbasol would be a good choice. Something else to think about would be a brushless cream which can be found in various places.... Aveda makes one (a bit pricy, and found in higher end hair salons), Skin Milk (I think it's called) found at K-Mart has recently gotten some mention here... search around here for brushless creams.... I think they may be better just for the fact that they don't have propellants and may be more moisturizing. But the Barbasol did get some good remarks lately, too.... Have fun at camp! :happy088
Yeah man,you can use Barbasol with a DE but remember to lather between passes.Thats what I find really important when I have to use canned goo(not very often though)
There are a couple of reasonable priced brushless creams available. Check a local WalMart for them. I can't recall the name, but look by the natural bath and body section, not in the regular shave supplies area. Burt's Bees has a brushless product. I know it would be difficult, but I can't help but think you would be a even better example for providing the boys an oportunity to see a nostolgic and plain good way to shave. They would most likely never see it anywhere else. It won't wreck your razor to use canned goo or a brushless cream, and you can use anything you like with DE.
i recently tried Neutrogena's non foaming shaving cream and am loving it. you don't need a brush and leaves your skin soft.
Brushless is way better than canned goo. I like Kiss My Face Moisture Shave, found at most organic markets and in the natural/organic section of some grocery stores. What I really like is using KMF with a brush, as it's one of the few products I've found that works both ways.
Thanks! Just goes to show that even though I always do a search before posting a question I can still miss it. I should have mentioned that the reason I was saying Barbasol is that I have an almost full can left after starting brush lathering. The link is perfect in that it is exactly what I was planning on doing for pretty much the same reason as he did. Have to carry my stuff about half mile and all. After reading everyone's replies, I'm actually leaning towards setting up a travel kit with small tube of the CO Bigelow (Proraso) cream, a cheap VDH brush and then when ready to leave throw in my Merkur HD - unless RAD kicks in and I have a different one to use by then. I guess I gotta just remember that as much as I like obsessing over this, it is (never again "just") a shave.
You know what I did (still do) with my stash of canned foam? Use it at home as a pre-shave lather. Works pretty well for that and softens the beard for the "good" stuff.

Thats the spirit Jonnie! .:signs107 I travel alot & use creams, shave sticks, there is no need to settle for anything less than what you want to settle for :happy088 Fozz
Take along your kit and whip up some lather with your brush it will be a great experience for the other little guys to see what you can do with out the can. You can tell them this is how every one shaved years ago and that it is still the best way. Enjoy Cub Camp it is a great time.
Barbasol is great for keeping the mirror from fogging up! Just wipe on, wipe off. If you're going to use it to shave with, then be sure to rinse the razor after every stroke. The reason for that is that it wets the head which greatly helps with the lubrication of the shave cream. You'll get a much smoother stroke that way and the razor will glide better. Those canned foams require water in order to lubricate properly.
Yeah I was wondering that as well. I'd much rather just bring a small container of the good stuff though.
I actually use Barbasol Red Can when I need a quick shave and can't spend the time lathering with my brush and tabac soap. Definitely relather between passes and rinse after every stroke. I'm pretty pleased with the shave I get from it. I can a pretty close two-pass with little irritation, which is all I ask for when I have to shave and run!
