Free, should someone be so kind! I can't spend any more on shaving! I like trades, giving gifts as well as receiving them. But no more buys until my stock's depleted.

I'm so glad I'm done with my AD's.

It's an idiom, not a proverb, and the idiom is "through rose-colored glasses,".

proverbial (definition #3) looks right to me.

For me, the order of long lasting BBS is:
    a Straight
a SE - the shave from a SE and a Str8 is too close to call and the BBS lasts
    a DE
    a Cartridge
    an Electric Norelco
As always, IRMD (Individual Results May Differ)

+1 I'm pretty sure a DE is a better shave than a cartridge BUT if you're really looking for a long lasting shave, SE is the deal. Cartridge: Barney Rubble beard by Lunch time, DE: 5 o'clock shadow around dinner time. SE: 5 o'clock shadow around dinner time, the next day

DE lasts longer for me. A 5 O'Clock shadow is truly a 5 or 6 O'clock shadow now. Even with proper technique, multiple passes, and high end products I'd have about a 12 O'clock shadow with a cartridge.

I haven't tied a single edge yet, but I'm being more tempted all the time.

I occasionally used Gillette Good News Razors, Schick Twins, or Bic's when traveling. I did it because I was lazy, but the shaves I received were very disappointing so I stopped and went with a Merkur Travel Razor with real blades, soap, and a brush. When I travel, I'm now a happy camper.

    Enjoy your shave... :D

If you shave every morning, the result is BBS shaves sometimes in just two quick passes :D

I'd have to say my shaves with a Mach3 last longer than with a DE but seeing as how I'm still relatively new to DE razors and shaving with them that's a given.

A lot of it is in the prep work. I shave the same way with both, 3 passes (WTG, XTG, ATG) and get BBS with a cartridge almost every time. I imagine it'll get close to even as I keep practicing.

Just curious, what's the difference between SE and DE that apparently helps SE razors do better? (Assuming that SE is single edge, rather than straight edge.) After all, you're only using one blade edge of a DE at a time, right?

    Cheers,
    Tom

SE razors are, in my experience about 300% more aggressive than DE razors. This is probably the product of several factors not the least of which is the blade. A SE blade is much, much stiffer and thicker than DE blades therefore, the cutting edge has a much bigger footprint than a DE blade which is a fraction of the thickness and much more pliable. The only double edge razor that I've ever used that even came remotely close to my beloved Gems is my recently acquired 1906 Old Style Single Ring. All my other DE razors seem far too meek for more than the occassional, casual shave. I must say though that DE razors have the edge when it comes to head razors. Single Edge razors seemed far too stiff and too aggessive to comfortably navigate all the bumps and curves of the head. However, my slim adjustable set to 7 rendors a great dome shave. I would heartily endorse a SE for anyone prone to shaving bumps and rash. These things are so aggressive that even with a heavy beard, I could probably get away with Monday, Wednesday and Friday shaves and still be at least presentable for the entire week. Of course, I shave daily just because it's so much fun anyway :D If you haven't at least tried a single edge, do yourself a favor and test drive one very soon. It is a whole different world and a whole different feeling. It's hard to go wrong with any of them but a 1912 Gem Jr. is a great place to start. I also hear very good things about the old Schick Injectors (although I can't speak from experience on those).

'37 Injectors w/ Pella and/or CVS house-brand blades yielded ridiculously close results with one WTG pass.

I'm assuming SEs do the same.

Nevertheless, I find shaving with an Injector to scarcely be enjoyable.

I love my DE razors and have so many blades!

    ...

    What is SE technique like?

    Any links to videos?

    I'm caving in:

Anyone want to trade an SE razor for a Magic Shavette?
