Could I Be a Can Guy?

I've never had problems with shaving cream from the can except that the variety in soaps and cream concentrates is so much wider in scope, with wonderful scents and superior skincare.

But at the same time I'm getting a little annoyed with the brush ritual, esp. with the harder-to-dry boar.

Anyone here prefer canned cream to traditional lather?

I'm really on the fence. It's the DE that accounts for my good shaves; canned vs brush-mixed lube doesn't make an objective difference when it comes shave quality.

PS - To those who've tried canned Proraso how does it compare, so far as scent and sensation are concerned, to the classic Green?

Have you tried L'Occitain in a can? I know that they make it, I have never tried it.

Have you tried Blade Runner by Origins. It works good for SEs, I haven't tried it with DEs. It does not work with Str8s.

I use Brut gel sometimes. It gives a fabulous shave for me and smells great. I use a brush to lather it on, though.

I've got a can of Nivea here too. Don't like it quite as much, though. One day I need to try the Aveeno stuff. That gets high praise on even these types of forums.

Theoretically the problem with the can creams and gels is the aerosol creates tiny little air bubbles that dry out your skin when you shave. If your tired of the brush which if your in a rush can be a pain but if you have the time can turn shaving from a task into a time of meditation, a "you time" if you will you should try a tube cream that you can lather in your hands. Like american crew shave cream

    But thats just the theory.

sol92258 I have no earthly idea

if it works for you, do it!

we make all the jokes and assumptions of DE/SE/SR vs. cartridge, brush/soap/cream vs. foam/goo, etc, but it really boils down to getting the best shave you can.

we're all generally at the consensus that proper prep, and attention to details is what makes the best shaves, almost no matter the equipment.

if you prefer/like the results of the shave of DE with canned foam, go for it.

I have the cade gel, and it is okay for travel but I wouldn't want to use it all the time. I definitely get a better shave with a brush and Shaving Cream/Soap. It is also expensive for a very small container.

Tell me more - I don't have a problem drying any brush...

No, but luckily for you, your face is different to mine...

  9. If I was going to try a canned cream, I would probably go with the AdP canned goo first.
That's just my first instinct because I already know I like the scent and all of their products I've used have been very high quality.
Its expensive, but its too late to turn back now... I'm spoiled on high end shaving products.

No, I wouldn't spurge on AdP's canned foam.

In fact, Noxzema's aerosol line, at 2.50 a can, is something of a ripoff when you consider you can get an Arko Stick for less.

Anyway, I think I was just in a stressed mode and was annoyed with lathering from scratch - but I'm so far in this game backing out would be ridiculous.

What's more, nothing suitably-priced in a can smells nice.

It's odd, though; everyone here loathes canned goo. I've recently used Gillette Foamy and Noxzema and they both work well for me.

Brush-mixed concoctions are more luxurious, more protective, but on my skin the difference is so marginal it can be overlooked.

Still, you can walk into most drugstores around here and buy a 150ml tube of SC by Real Shave Co., which works wonderfully and sells for under $5, and get much more mileage out of that tube, lathered by brush, than would out of any ordinary-sized can.

I used Pinaud Clubman’s canned foam for a few years and thought it was the greatest shaving foam on earth; maybe it was because it’s been discontinued. I used Colgate’s regular canned foam for many years; teriffic stuff, also discontinued.

I’m afraid to try any new canned foams, if I like one, it’ll surely be discontinued.

I have a can of Barbasol just in case.......well....just in case. It works. Too much cushion IMO. Cant get a BBS shave but also cant cut myself either. It is quite moisturizing and plenty of protection. I prefer not to use it but at least I have it just in case.

The canned goo smell is what keeps me from going back to cans. I like the soap/ cream combo mainly for the scent. The price comes in close second. A puck of Williams and a tube of Arko last me for months. You just can't get that price for performance ratio from a can.

And for the record, I don't loathe canned goo. I probably said stuff to that effect after I converted to the brush and soap approach, but to be honest, I've found the canned lathers to be nearly equally effective.

    Hi all,

I've been lurking here for awhile, but I registered because of this thread. I too, am a can guy - and I thought I might be the only one... After numerous brush purchases, both boar and badger, and God only knows how many soaps and creams, I've found that my most consistent and nick-free shaves come from my Merkur 23C, Red Israeli Personnas......................and Barbasol in the can.

While I do love the scents of all those soaps and creams, I love the simplicity and consistency that canned foam provides even more. I get my scent fix with aftershave- and I'm even a cheapskate in that department, preferring A/V, Pinaud, Skin Bracer, etc. :D

:signs046 to TSD Drummer. Personally, I wouldn't go back to the canned stuff (gel or foam) but I think you'll find that most of us here will tell you that if your set-up works, and you are happy with it, then that is the best. Just enjoy your shaves.;)

This thread shows what I think is the basis for product disagreement between Kaveh and myself. My skin reacts poorly to everything I've used from a can. I think it's the propellants. I can get a good shave from a Mach 3 with hand crafted lather. The DE take the shave up a notch, but makes less difference for me than the lather. It seems everyone's skin has it's own unique set of sensitivities and we all need to find what works for us and what we enjoy.

My friend showed me a can of Barbasol Skin Conditioner that he was using for a long time, which he bought in Los Angeles. He was telling me this is the best foam for tender skin, but the truth is, I tried it a long time ago, and after 3 shaves, I threw it out, because it was burning and irritating my skin badly.
