Favorite open comb?

In honor of "open comb week" I'd like to know what all of your favorite open comb razors are and why. I've only ever used my Merkur 38c, which is closed comb. Who has tried more than one open comb model? Merkur, Gillete old or NEW, Ikon, Goodfella, others? I'd love to hear about it.

Thats a big question. Most of my razors are OC and it depends on what I want that day which I will use.

If I want real nostalgia, I will go with the 1912 Gem Deluxe or my 1912 Single Ring Gillette.
If I want an aggressive shave, I will go with a Gillette Old Style or the older version of the Muhle Pinsel R89.
If I want something different, I go with open comb-slants (Merkur or Ziglar)
If I want something crazy, how about a modified Valet autostrop
If I want something mild because that aggressive or crazy razor gave me some irritation, I go for the Shave King.

If I just want something that will get the job done on a typical morning, I go for a NEW.

And no, that is not all the models out there. My point is that there isn't any one open comb for anyone, let alone everyone.

 

All time favorite is my 1912 Gem open comb. Nothing compares, Wonder shave. NUFF SAID

OC Gem Micromatic is next. Got to drive this one.,., but a nice shave once the technique is there.

after that I like the Gillette OLD. a bit aggressive.. but that is a good thing

Gillette New... this is my least favorite for some reason. Most like it more but does not do it for me. Not sure why.


Other then a straight nothing beats a OC for shear cool points.

iKon/Tech Handle

 

Though I don't shave with it enough, the Single Ring is definitely mine. Then the sheraton. Soon I will try a British Popular and say what I think of it

 

Gillette Old & GEM Micromatic. I hope to add IKON to the list in the next couple of weeks.

 

I own just one - the goodfella black head.

I like my Gillette NEW. I haven't used a lot of o.c. razors, but of the ones I've used it's the best balanced between aggressive and mild.

 

For my go to I like My Ikon ball end handle. For everyday It cleans easily. For special on a time limit its the Gem Micromatic. Nothing I have used gets closer than the Micromatic except a str8.

 

My favorite.....Sheraton.

I don't have much for razors other than OC....From the Gem OC Micromatic to the Old style Gillette, they all deliver the BBS. The "Go To" DE for me is the Bar Handle New short tooth version. When I die, somebody better drop it in my box with me or I'm coming back to get it!

 

Gillette NEW. far and away my favorite.

 

Long or short teeth?

 

I prefer short, but I've found that a Feather helps me get the most out of the long-tooth model as well.

 

I only have a long teethed one... but I much prefer a OLD or Single ring... not as good as the OC 1912 though.

Well, I like my Bull Mastiff with the Old type head.
Scary-aggressive, but it shaves like no other.

 

At's what I am talking about.... Real shaving equipment... stands up and growls at you... HEH
