I have been using a Gillette fat boy adjustable with persona blades. Decided to branch out and bought this. I use Col. Cunk's amber soap and a badger hair brush. any words of wisdom before the first merkur shave?
Yeah! Throw away the Merkur blade that came with it,,,,,,,,,, MHO of course ;-) I use the same technique with my slant that I do with my HD, but I,m a little slower through the tough spots. -Moe

My 2p: Make sure the blade is centered. Slants can sometimes have a bit of blade wiggle (like a Gillette Old Style). If the blade is askew, the shave may be a bit rough. Otherwise, they're awesome!
+1 One of the worst shaves I have had yet was with one of those Merkur blades. They need to stick to the razors and leave the blades to the people who know how to make them.
Ummm....while Merkur blades are generally disliked by most folks. The advice to throw away the blade that comes with the razor is based on the blade knocking around the box during shipment.
