WOW! I had previously shaved with a Gem Micromatic standard version (not the open comb style) and sliced my chops in many places. So I bought a couple of the “Clog Pruf” versions off that big auction site for next to nothing.

Fearing the worst, I really prepped and then focused on technique, moving slowly, applying no pressure, and ….

AWESOME SHAVE! Not sure what the difference is; if anyone knows if this one is truly more mild, please let me know.

So if you’ve had a hard time with the regular Micromatic, you might want to get your paws on a Clog Pruf. Sure was mighty good to me!!

Would love to hear the impressions of others, esp. those who have used both.

Next on my Gem list: the famed 1912…have very high expectations based on all you guys’ comments.

Bully... gotta love the face hoe.. I like them all. The clog pruf is maybe a bit easier to use. You will love the 1912.

Way to go Jim! Glad to hear you had such a great shave.

I do have both, enjoy both, and don't have a problem with either. I think you'll find the answer to a better shave with the MicroMatic right within your own post, "Fearing the worst, I really prepped and then focused on technique, moving slowly, applying no pressure..." Works for me. In fact, what you said right there MUST apply to any and all razors if you expect to get a decent shave, keeping in mind there may be a slight difference in the technique applied for different razors. I think too many people get sloppy with their technique, or think they can use the same technique with any ol' razor, then blame it on the razor.

Thanks Steve. Just to follow up, are you saying there isn't much difference between the two? That I may have been 'playing scared' and done better prep and technique, thereby assuring a better shave? That is sure possible, so I guess using them both several times might give me a better idea of that...?

Yea, maybe you were playing it a bit safe. I don't know. Only you can aswer that.

I really don't believe there is much difference between the two. Were you using the same blade in each? How 'bout the same soap? I've found different blades and different soaps can affect my shave, even with the same razor. You hit the nail on the head saying you'll have to give 'em both a fair shave, er, shake.

So let the hunt begin for the elusive prep/razor/blade/brush/soap/water-to-soap ratio/post shave combo that gives the shave above all shaves!

I would agree.. keep using them till you make them work.. that is how I do it.

My only Micromatic is an open comb. There is a learning curve with these razors but once you get it, they all give great shaves and you will only begrudgingly return to the DE for short periods of time.

As for 1912s believe every sylable of the hype, these are absolutely amazing shavers and after 3 piece week is over on Sunday I plan to treat myself to a 1912 week. I've never once even had weepers from a 1912 (let alone nicked myself) and oddly they seem every bit as aggressive as the open comb Micromatic.

Stick with the SE, when the learning curve is mastered it really is a beautiful thing.

After 1912's I would recommend graduating to lather catchers. IMHO this is the pinacle of SE nirvana.

Hmm.. First post you applaud him and now your second post is coming across as insulting?

Seeing as how English is probably not your first language, I'll give you a chance to explain yourself better and hope for the best, maybe I'm missing something here.

This (ahem...) gentleman (not Fuzzy, the Vodka guy...) sent me a decent pm:

Glad to hear, you like Micromatic like me
I`m still newbie, but i`ve got great shaves with my Open Comb.
I`m from Europe, and it`s very difficult to find SE blades, but except that, this is one great razor

    ...
    and then this...

hmmm....my European friend, you will profit greatly (I have) from reading this forum and being a gentleman here....thanks.

I recently found one of these at a yard sale. It was the Brass version.
My question is How do you clean them and keep them from tarnishing?

I normally use Scrubbing bubbles on my razors but have read this might not be the best thing for these. I would love to make this razor shine beautiful.

    Thank You

I have a gold-plated (brass, if you will) and used Scrubbing Bubbles with no plate or finish loss. Great shine and sterilized, to boot (I used the anti-bacterial stuff).
