I was given a great gift from the people here on the forum, a gold Gillette Tech. I am trying to learn a technique with it and so far I am not sure I am doing wrong. I see from Matic's videos that it is about hair reduction not elimination. I am not sure if I do not have proper blade angle with the razor or is it just that gentle? I was given some blased as well and right now it has a Derby blade in it. I love the gentle shave but I can not tell if I am cutting hairs with it or just running it over my face. Thanks for the help.

Try this.... on your arm, put the razor on your arm so that it is at a right angle. Now rock it down slowly and watch the blade. Observe about what angle the blade makes contact with your skin. It will probably be around 30 degrees.

Just to be on the safe side... I see these the wrong way on eBay so I will go ahead and check - is it assembled correctly? The curved safety bar curves down not up into the cap.

    Hi Paul,
Yea, the Tech is VERY gentle. The only way to know if you're cutting hairs is running your hand over your face when you're finished shaving, that would mean after your final pass if you do more than one. If it is cutting hairs, and you're happy with the results, you're doing right!

I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan of the Tech because it is so gentle. I like as close to BBS as I can get. It's why I prefer a more aggressive razor. But that's me, a bit of a shave geek.

Stick with it. If you're not satisfied after a month of shaves with the Tech, check the Den's classifieds and try something else.

    Have fun with the hunt!

Thank you for the help. The razor is assembled correctly and it fits together nicely. It is a gold tech, I wonder how old it is? You can not buy these new anymore right, they are vintage? I am using VDH deluxe and Williams with it right now with a very soft (to me) Ever Ready brush with a synthetic knot in it. Not having razor burn is such a wonderful improvement.

Techs were produced for a really long time- but you might try looking under the base plate (the piece that has the safety bar) for a serial number. You might be able to look up a date using that.

and yes, the razor is vintage. congrats on the good shaves!

The only thing I see on the back of it is Made In USA and a pat. #, I do not see anything else there. I like the razor very much.

You may very well have blade angle issues but I myself own a no date code Gillette Tech and can tell you that it is a SUPER passive razor. Something else I can tell you is the more you shave with it, the more you'll want to shave with it. Even though it may take an extra pass, the gentle little Tech make it very enjoyable indeed.

I've tried a slew of Techs - in fact, I have more Techs than any other razor.

I think they're excellent for beginners.

When I first started shaving I bought a Merkur Closed-Comb Fixed-Head. I could not shave it.

After appropriating some Techs, I got my technique down and discovered the joy of DE shaving.

Do I still use my Techs? Asbolutely. I prefer more aggression (nothing more than a Merkur fixed) but if you can shave, you can shave.

At worst, you'll note it takes more passes to get to the same place with a Tech.

The Gillette Tech is a very mild razor. I would try a sharper blade and see if that helps. If not, you may want to try a razor that is slightly more aggressive for comparison. It sometimes takes a little while to find the razor and blade that works best for you.

    Oh...Welcome to The Shave Den.

    Hello!

IF you're a begginer, don't be greedy with the results...
at the first times you're going to feel that you're not properly shave... you might get some razor burns.. althought you're the only one feeling the "bad shave sindrome" and nobody noticing anything different on you.

it takes time to your skin adjust to this .. I took about 3 weeks shaving daily to get my first "baby butt shave".
I've never shaved XTG (cross to the grain) or even thought about shaving ATG (against the grain) before.

Don't be greedy! there's something you'll get by your own:
you won't be able to shave all at once.. this is a kind of ritual that you keep shaving until you get shaved :D (consider the rules: don't shave twice the same spot withou relathering)

BTW: good lather is 50-75% of a good shave.. be sure you have the right tools and be sure you massage your face well with the brush.
(at my first times I put some johnson's hidrating oil every night before sleep and some prior to lather)

rule #1 (as I see): there are no rules, do whatever suits you best! This and other sites are and must be seen as guidelines only :D (feel free to shave with an axe if it pleases you :D i don't mind :D )

    happy shavings!!

PS: it can only gets better!
