I want to purchase a 1948 SS (my birth year). My understanding is 1948 did not have a date code and it was the first year they placed a notch in the blade bar. Here's my main question. Someone is selling what he claims is a 1949 SS. He claims that because it has the notch, it's a 1949. Couldn't it also be a 1948 or a 1950?
[slash]I seem to recall that 48's had no notch, but 49's and 50's did, but I could also be recalling incorrectly, it's been awhile since I've researched them much.[/slash] yeup, just what I suspected...my rememberator ain't workin' right! '48-'50 had the notch, with the end of the run of '50 getting the first date codes But that's what stuck out in my head...I'll wait around with you until AsylumGuido, or another of our superspeed experts weigh in to answer your question, yes, it could be any in that range, which, unless you know someone who bought it in 1949, and was sure it was a new model at the time of purchase, I think the general range is probably about as good as you're gonna get
I think your understanding is correct. Now, if the red and clear polystyrene box had been included, it would indicate a 1949 or '50 model, since that box was introduced in 1949. And there is some evidence that variations in box style indicate a model made earlier or later in that two-year period.
I suspected that unless they had the original box, the best I could do was buy something in that year range. The seller of the one on ebay probably chose 1949 because it's the middle year. Thanks for the reply.
THAT'S what it was! the clear and red box came with the '49 & '50! see, told you my rememberator doesn't always work right...I knew there was something different with the '48 and the '49-'50. I remember finding that out when I acquired mine in the red and clear box....
48 superspeed Hi, the only way to know if you have a 48 superspeed is to find one in the original packaging. This was the first year of the notched center bar and it came in a cardboard box with the advertising for the notch printed on the inside of the box lid. The 49 was the first year for the clear and red plastic case so it could be a 49 or 50 in that case. My birth year is 48 and it took a while to find one in the original packging, Guido helped me with the identification, he has pictures of the packaging to look for. Good Luck bc
Great razor!! I own a vintage 48-50 superspeed. The previous posters are correct. To nail down the actual date of the razor, you would need to see the original package. Good luck in your quest.
Thanks for all the replys. I picked up one the seller claims is a 49. Though I'm not sure he knows for sure. When I asked him how he knew without the original box, he claimed, "Only a true collector can tell the difference." Sounded too esoteric for me. lol. I'm sure I'll be happy with a razor from any of those three years.
Yes, you will! I've been using my pre-code, notched SS for the last 2 months straight and am really digging it.
