Jojoba Oil as preshave

Though I've been wetshaving for many years, I've only recently gotten into the "hobby" of shaving. One of the things I'm looking into for the first time is pre-shaving. I've read that jojoba oil makes a great natural pre-shave and I'd like to try it, but I'm not quite sure how you use it. Do you get your face shave-ready first with hot water, then dry it, then apply the jojoba oil, or do you apply the oil while the face is still wet. And then do you immediately shave, or do you give the oil a chance to be absorbed into the skin. And one final question, are there other natural oils/balms that work well as a pre-shave? Thanks for your input.

Sffone, I've been using glycerin as an occasional pre shave as first brought up bu 1OldGI. My process has been to wet the face well and then apply it before working up my lather. I hope there are some more answers coming.

Turnz2, I too have used the glycerin as a pre shave after reading the Old GI thread about it. It works well, but I had bought a small bottle of olive oil before I got the glycerin and I have to say that the oil does seem to give me a more comfortable result than the glycerin. The glycerin is more down my alley right now because its cheaper and you get a lot more of it. I used mineral oil before the olive oil and the glycerin, just because it was already in the medicine cabinet. Until the Queen of Blades informed me that mineral oil could inhibit acne in some cases. Nix the mineral oil. lol Don't need that curse again.

I used to do it after warm water prep, just before lathering. But oil doesn't dpo much for me as a pre-shave. SOMEtimes I'll do an oil pass as a last pass. Oils definitely help me as an aftershave. I usually apply them at night and they help healing. I mix Vit E and Jojoba 50-50. I also like a few drop of Shave Secret mixed in with Proraso Pre/Post right after a shave. I like the scnet, plus it's slightly mentholated adding to the coolness of the Proraso.

Baby Oil is Mineral Oil with added fragrance. And as southernscribbler said, mineral oil is pore-clogging and can thus cause acne.

Thanks. I should have known that. In fact, I probably did at one time. I have a good memory but it's short.

I too am looking to try a preshave oil product, especially for my ATG pass, which is my weak point. I have noted comments throughout Shaveden recommending grapeseed oil, caster oil, and olive oil, separately or in combination. Another site cited a critical difference between shave oil and preshave oil, though it did not describe the ingredient difference in detail. Still researching. Will share when I hit a winner.

    Hello!

A portion of the advantages of pre-shave oil includes Moisturizes the skin. Readies the skin for a smooth, close shave. Gives a layer of security to the skin to shield it from the extremely sharp steel.

I have a home made Vanilla after shave splash in which I used vitamin E oil as the carrier. While I've never believed in the benefits of a preshave product much, I do like to use it in the shower, just rinsing it off a little after letting it sit for a minute or two. Even if it's all in my head, I swear I get a better shave after. I guess there are a few oils out there to try, though I sure appreciate the knowledge from Queen Of Blades and the rest of you.

Neither do I believe in a specific pre shave product. Take a shower, get out and dry off, except the area to be shaved, work the lather in, and let it sit for a little bit.

That's what cream and soap are for.

essential oils are becoming a popular main ingredient of skin care products, Pre-shave/Post Shave even moisturizers. I think it's because more of us are looking for healthier/eco-friendly ingredients. But when I was a teen I used baby oil, sometimes coconut oil, not the VCO of this generation, mine was something my grandma would cook herself, have you tried it too?

I apply my pre-shave to dry skin. As for other oils, sweet almond oil works. I like to mix either of those with some castor oil, for extra slip.
