can you (should you) shave everyday with a str8t?

or should you wait a day or two for you wiskers to grow a little bit.

str8t shaved last night and tonight and tonight my face feels a little sore/raw.

I suppose you should shave with your straight only every other day for a while to properly condition your face. Also, some good facial balm, such as jojoba oil, might help the process. But, within a few weeks you should be able to shave with your straight every day. If you continue to have problems, perhaps your razor has not been properly honed and the blade is too harsh. I shave with a straight seven days a week, sometimes twice a day, without any problems.

 

I always shave with a straight now. Usually everyday but sometimes every other day. I have experienced that a straight shave is easier on my skin than any other shaver but I usually only take one pass and find that sufficient.

 

it depends. how sharp is the razor, how good your skill is shaving (light pressure), how good the lather is, and how prepared your beard is. i too have had that same feeling. you shave 12hrs later or so and you feel raw and just scraped too much. but i just like it so much and am so determined to learn this skill i do shave almost every 12hrs regardless of how my face feels.....probbaly not a good idea but still. now one thing iv been wanting to do is to practice on a balloon. make your lather, blow up a balloon, and practice. and basically your supposed to be able to shave the balloon without it poping. so you can try that if you want and let your face recover. and iv noticed i do get a little bit better of a shave after i let my face heal for a day or 2.

 

Man I can just see that ballon pop, shaving cream everywhere!!

If your face feels sore, I don't recommend shaving it

The more you practice the faster you get It takes me about 5 minutes to get a fine shave

I usually shave with one every day, but occasionally I'm in a hurry and need to use a DE. But yes, if I got a up few minutes earlier and gave myself the time, I would use one every day with confidence.

 

Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So you got that goin' for you, which is nice.

PS I used a straight daily for a couple of years and suffered no ill effects. I eventually decided that ther're alot of cool razors out there and I wanted to fool around with some of them - now I use a straight about half the time.

My day does not seem to start out right if i dont go through the whole prep/shave/post ritual. Helps get me ready for the day.

 

I try to shave just about every day. I don't really use my DEs anymore, although I did break out the slant earlier this week.

I usually shave every day with a straight of some type. Usually with a Feather AC or KAI Captain to save time on the strop, and I can assure you that its perfectly safe to shave every day with a straight... at least for me it is. It might be different if your skin is very sensitive. Still, often my shave from the day before is so close that I can get away with only shaving every other day.

 

Straights are simply another shaving tool - no more and no less. So, of course you can shave with them every day if you need to. Once you are up to speed with technique etc.

But because straights are basically "first principles" shaving, it is very common for people new to straights to skip a day, or even two, between shaves to let their skin rest. So many things to get right, and if even one of those things is sub-optimal you will get a sub-optimal shave (at best). Personally, it took me a good 3 months before I started daily face shaving (and probably 6 months at least before I started getting consistently "good" shaves). I know several other more experienced straight users with the same time-frame.

If you really need to shave every day (because your stubble shows up and whatnot) try just doing a WTG pass and see if that helps. You can get a decent shave that way, without the extra irritation an ATG pass often brings.
