So new to the whole wet shaving thing. Husband got some DE razors from his dad, due to his interest in we shaving. I was put in charge of research and information gathering. First DE razor is a Ball End Tech. (Gillette). I don't remeber what year it is as that info is at home, and I'm at work now. Second DE razor I have no idea what it is. It says Star on the top, nothing that I can see under or inside where the razor goes. The handle is exactly like the 1912 Model Gem. Any hints or clues as to what the second razor is or even if it's a good razor at all? We've got alot to learn so I'm sure you all will be hearing from me again with more questions. Thanks! Munchkin
Welcome to The Shave Den :signs046 I'm sure that all the guys and galls here can assist you with the gathering of information Enjoy your stay here :happy088
Welcome to The Shave Den! A great community of guys and gals that enjoy wet shaving, I hope you enjoy your stay! I think I know the Star D/E you are talking about, but for the life of me I cannot find a picture to be sure we are talking about the same one. I have never used one, therefore can't comment on the shave. Sorry!
Are you sure that the Star is a double edge? I do have a Star DE razor which is sort of like a cross between a Gillette Tech and an old Gillette. Got it in this eBay auction (live eBay links not allowed, but I think "dead" ones are okay). When you say handle like a Gem 1912, that sounds more like a single edge. This picture is of an Ever Ready, but there were Star models that were very similar. And Gem, of course. In either case, depending on the condition, it's probably not worth a lot of money, but will be a well made razor, and a good shaver. And don't take my word for it about the worth, the market for vintage items is a strange thing, and I'm no expert.
I'll get some pictures up once I get a chance so everyone can take a look. I'm not looking to sell them, just want to know if they are decent razors to use.
That one I have and use, and I have an identical one in silver finish with PAL embossed on the head, nice mild shavers reminiscent of a Tech. The one I was trying to find had a handle similar to this S/E IIRC, not sure if the head is the same as the one above, it has been a while since I saw one go through eBay.
Don't know about either of those razors, but you might join hubby in wetshaving, it works great on the legs, too. And, it is very enjoyable. Good luck with your research
Ok, so we'll see if this works as I'm at work right now so it might not. If this doesn't work I'll try again when I get home. The handle is the same as the one that dridecker posted.
Same head as on the Star D/E I have, someone flipped the baseplate over the wrong way on yours, fix that and it should be shave ready.
I was wondering about that yesterday, and was going to ask some more questions on the ladies sight. I was thinking which ever razor my husband doesn't use maybe I'll try my hand with the other.
Great! Thanks for the info! Do you like yours? Is it a good shaver? How does it compare to the Ball Tech? Oh, and what blades to get? I did see a post on here that someone said that we can get a badger and a boar bristle brush for relatively cheap, to try them both. I'm still looking for that thread again so I can right the info down for hubby.
It shaves very similar to the Tech, meaning it is a mild non-aggressive razor, would be fine to learn with. Blades are very much a YMMV thing, lots of different opinions as to what is the best, so generally a sample pack is recommended. Don't recall the thread about brushes offhand.
Ok, so just have to find a sample pack of razors, and brush (found the thread I was looking for). I've already got hubby something special for Valentines Day. How do you guys like the leather and oak leaves/acorns scents from TSD?
I would have to say the lollypop quild, as I have a sweet tooth, and enjoy lollypops alot...lol...actually Munchkin is nickname my husband gave me since I'm a good 9-10 inches shorter than him. thanks again for everyone's help!
