Friday, February 19, 2010 Razor: Gem G-Bar & Merkur Futur Blade: Pal Carbon Steel SE Blade & Super Iridium Brush: Simpson's Ehsan Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime Soap: Palmolive Shave Stick A/S: D.R. Harris Sandalwood Have you heard the saying that curiosity killed the cat? Well I don't know about that but it nearly maimed the BullGoose. I started out my shave with a Gem G-Bar razor loaded up with a fresh Pal carbon steel blade...a new combination for me. This particular combination did not suite my face/beard/technique at all and I could tell immediately. Ouch! I switched to my trusty Futur and Super Iridium combination and enjoyed an excellent shave. The D.R. Harris Sandalwood aftershave is becoming a favorite.
Friday, February 19 Hot Shower Tweezerman Badger Brush l'Occitane Cade Soap Gillette SS Derby blade So, after a recommendation to switch to the Derby (Dorco ST-300 was not feeling good...), I decided to try shaving my head. It went great! I had to go WTG then ATG, but it is nice and smooth with very little irritation (almost none!). I was very encouraged to shave my face. Too encouraged As a result, I am sitting on my worst DE shave yet. WTG went quite well, but ATG was an absolute disaster. The blade wasn't cutting, I was using too much pressure, I could not find a good angle, and now I have irritation, burning, and razor burn. Ouch!
Bummer. May I recommend an XTG (across the grain) pass after WTG and BEFORE ATG? Try that and see if it helps. Hope you recover quickly!
I know how that goes. Just when things seem to be getting easier...something goes drastically wrong. Friday: 72 SS Black handle Wilkinson Sword Blade Semogue 1250 TSD SOTQ Cracklin Firewood TSD 2x Iced English Fern AS The shave was dandy. However, after loading my brush I experienced terrible hand failure and fumbled my brush causing an incredible amount of pre-lather to be smeared on two containers of hand lotion, the counter and the top of the toilet. The volume of the unlathered soap was remarkable.
Ouch! Hope it heals quickly for you! Steve has given you some great advice there too, a XTG pass will help reduce the whiskers even further.
Shave Of The Day - February 19th Hot Shower E.J. Badger Brush TSD SOTQ - Crackling Firewood Scent E.J. Chatsworth Zorrick Blade - Day 3 Homemade Skin Food Brut Classic Thought this shave was going to be a bad one as the Zorrik blade started to tug right off the get go, but I finished out the shave with it, and am pleasantly surprised by how close and smooth of a shave I ended up with. Spent a little extra time loading the SOTQ onto the brush and ended up having enough lather for 6+ passes, which was the idea anyway, since my youngest son (15) said he needed to shave today also. Got to do a little bonding time in the ole shave den with him.

Saturday Shave Saturday, February 20, 2010 EJ Chatsworth Gillette 7 O’Clock Black Vulfix 2234 Super Speick Cream Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Speick balm The shave this morning ended up being DFS+, but was not particularly comfortable. The blade (on shave #4) seemed somewhat rough and the little bugger tried to bite me a few times. It was unsuccessful at drawing blood, but made me resolve to change the blade as soon as I was finished with the shave. I have replaced it with an Astra, a blade I can trust. I believe the 7 O’Clock Black is made in the same factory as the Astras, Iridiums, and 7 O‘Clock Yellow. The last three blades are favorites of mine, the 7 O’Clock Black is not. The WH/Speick Balm combo provided an excellent finish and my face now feels good. -Vance

SOTD Saturday February 20, 2010 Razor: '59 Gillette Fat Boy Blade: Dorco Brush: Medium Badger Soap/Mug: Tabac ASB: Nivea Replenishing Aftershave: Adidas Dynamic Pulse Excellent shave this morning. I weaned myself from the Mach 3 a little over a month ago and went with the DE razor. Even though I have been doing the brush and soap lathering for the last 7 years my skin was always irritated with razor burn and the bumps from ingrown whiskers was really bad on my neck when using the Cartridge. Now, my skin has cleared and the bumps are gone completely, I get zero irritation and a ten fold closer shave with the DE. Since discovering this excellent forum and receiving the collective wisdom of the fine gentlemen here, I have also become aware of the great soaps, creams, and aftershaves that make the act of shaving a pleasant morning experience. Thanks to all who have given their wisdom and hospitality to those who have found this forum.:1respect
