Saturday, March 27, 2010 E.J. Chatsworth Bolzano Superinox Omega #20086 (the “Bambino”) Boar Valobra SS Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Proraso A/S Balm I was amazed at how great this morning’s shave was. I used the “Bambino”, a tiny boar brush which I had purchased last summer as a travel brush and then had pretty much forgotten about it. It had hardly been used, but it produced enough creamy lather for my customary three passes + chin area touchup without returning to the soap to reload the brush. Maybe the success was due to the Bambino recognizing Valobra as its Italian paisano. Anyway, I guess face lathering is the more accepted way of using a boar brush, but I bowl lathered and didn’t look back. The result was near BBS and now I’m motivated to try the Bambino with other soaps having travel potential. Next time, I’ll try face lathering because I don’t really want to pack a bowl for travel. I decided to add to the Italian content of the shave by ending with Proraso A/S balm, which proved to be an excellent finish.
SOTD Sasturday March 27, 2010 Razor: 5/8 Mehaz Soap: Ogallala Bay Rum and Sandalwood Mug: Ceramic Clipper Brush: Custom Rosewood Silvertip ASB: Nivea Replenishing Aftershave: Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum First shave with the 5/8 Mehaz Straight after honing on the barber's hone I just received. Felt a lot keener edge but the shave wasn't quite so close. I think it's more my bad technique than sharpness of the blade. For starters, my shave yesterday with the GEM 1912 was so BBS I really didn't have enough length on the whiskers to shave early in the morning. When I got back home at 2:30 I tried to shave and used Ogallala SS which kept drying out on my face before I could get completed with the shaving pass. (My slow and cautious razor strokes no doubt cause this). I'm probably going to have to straight shave a number of days in a row to get the technique down and the speed up. Oh well, life is a learning process. Makes me really appreciate the He77 of a job the GEM 1912 did yesterday!

Another Lynrd Skynrd man! I love Skynrd but I'm not sure I could straight shave when I'm listening to them though. I'd slice myself to ribbons!
glycerin and hot wet rag preshave GEM Micromatic GEM personna (1) Col Conk Amber SS Shop-Rite menthol aftershave Grrrrrr. Still struggling with this razor. Had a much better shave than all previous attempts with it though. Gonna give it a full week. It worked with the LUX DE, I just need some time to learn the razor perhaps.
Mine also is a tempermental witch. The good shaves are great but the bad shaves are inexplicably horrible. Quite like shaving with a broken beer bottle actually. My 1912's are much, much more consistent performers. I can't ever remember either one delivering a bad shave (even with a really high mileage blade)
My 1912 is much easier to get a close and comfy shave with also. I know I can get a good shave with it, now my project razor is the micromatic, I have to give it a bit of time I think, and it'll be fine.

The Goodfella is such a gentle razor, the Elios is a smooth blade, and the Solo Menthol cream has all the right ingredients for comfort and enjoyment. It smells great, it lathers thick and rich, and it has a very pleasant cooling sensation, and it leaves the skin very well-defended against dryness and irritation. I cannot say enough good things about good old Mennen Skin Bracer Original aftershave--I love it!

I think I have the micromatic figured out, DFS+ with only a tiny weeper on my 'stache. I'm thinking my angle has been off the previous shaves. I went with the flat part MUCH closer to parallel this time and maintained that discipline throughout the shave and it seems to have worked. I'll duplicate it tomorrow for Menthol Monday and see if I'm on to something. :happy023 And I let my 11 year old "shave" with me but this time I let him feel the arctic blast of the menthol. We got another one for the club in a year and a half guys! He's hooked
