SOTD Saturday May 22, 2010 Razor: 11/16 Geo. Wostenholm Pipe Razor Half Hollow Spike Point Soap/Mug: Tabac Scuttle RAB Ceramic Brush: Medium Badger ASB: Nivea Replenishing Aftershave: Aqua Velva Musk Great razor and wonderful shave! I'm really lovin' these Wosties! The blades take a wicked edge and shave clean and smooth. This one doesn't have a place or country stamped on it, only the Geo. Wostenholm & Sons trade mark. (the & Sons stamp under the Geo. Wostenholm has been added at a later date probably after the Sons joined the company) Not sure of the age but probably just after this company started selling in America around 1836 - 1847 during the Rockingham Works era. After 1847 they started their Washington Works in Sheffield and noted that on their razors. At any rate, this is a great razor! I need to replace the Buffalo Horn scales however, these have seen their better days. :sad024 Have a great weekend Gentlemen and thanks for sharing the fine photos! :happy005

First Str8 Shave! Sunday Prep: Hot shower Coffee: French Roast Dark, unknown brand, hot and black Soap: Muhle Sandalwood Brush: Shea Moisture Shave (the Dridecker Special ) Razor: Boker Red-Injun 101, honed up by our own gssixgun, day 1, 3 passes Styptic Pencil: Pinaud Clubman Post: Cold water rinse, ice water splash, Humphreys Maravilla Lotion, Curve 'Stache Wax: Firehouse Wacky Tacky Shave Rating: 5 Blades - mostly for the "cool" factor of being my first str8 shave! A str8 shaver virgin no longer. Not the closest, but :signs021. To start, the brush isn't bad for $9. It lost a hair, maybe two, was all. I liked it. As I was whipping up the lather, I thought it might be a bit dry, but let it pass, figuring it would be okay. I just wanted to start shaving! The first pass went pretty well. The blade seemed to stick at times, hence my belief the lather was a bit dry. I got one nick trying to push through, and one nick just moving the blade ever-so-slightly parallel with the edge on the second pass. Both taken care of with the styptic. I also noticed that on my cheeks, the easiest area to shave, I was able to give it a bit of a slicing motion. That seemed to move the blade much smoother through the pass. Practice will get me there for the tougher areas. With DEs I hold the razor with a bit of a slant and I find I do get a smoother pass. After the first pass, I rinsed off, lathered up again (adding a bit of water and KMF unscented cream), and started to reach for my MM Clog Pruf. "Nah, go for it" runs across my mind. So I do. Pass #2 I gave XTG my best shot. Still needs work, but nick #2 (see above). ATG for pass #3. The lather still isn't the best. Maybe it was the soap, maybe the brush, more than likely just me being impatient to get to the shave. No nicks! All said and done, this was not my closest shave. Had I been using a DE or SE and had result like this, it would be two blades. But I had fun, didn't hurt myself too bad, and I'm presentable for church, so it's cool - 5 blades! I still have a lot of technique to learn. I'll keep watching video and reading the forums. You guys have been great!
:happy096 Congrats Steve! May it just be the first of many close enjoyable straight shaves. :eatdrink047
2nd str8 shave First off I want to say that this is pretty neat. I've been getting the shave I want by "cleaning up" with my DE but the whole str8 shave experience is cool, I just can't wait to get a good close shave with it. Now, onto the shave.... Gold Dollar str8 '68 Gillette slim adj (3) unknown blade (2) Shea Moisture $9 badger VDH deluxe M&L FL Water Pretty much the same as yesterday, two passes, one WTG and one against with the str8. I did do better today so I only did one ATG pass with the DE. I can't believe the difference still when setting the str8 down and cleaning up with the DE, holy cow is it stark. Stroker, I do like the buttering toast description, very apt my friend.
Steve, congrats! I'm kinda enjoying the str8 thing. I think I need to get a better razor though, but it is fun no less.
Sunday: Menthol Big Time! Omega Wooden Handle Ming Shi TTO/Wilkinson Sword day 3 Everest-SC :love008 :love008 :freezing :freezing Lubriderm unscented moisturizer Barbon-AS :love008 :love008 :freezing :freezing Chabrawichi 555-Cologne The temperature is going to be in the 80's here in Montreal, and I am already well-tanned, and a nice mentholated shave was (and always is) necessary for me to feel comfortable. The Everest cream from Russia has such a lovely scent, and the lather is off the wall. It explodes like a bomb as soon as the brush touches your face. The menthol feeling starts off mild, but it gets increasingly stronger. The Barbon aftershave is frigid, with a very nice scent as well, and the Chabrawichi cologne, although it is oviously not mentholated, still has a cooling effect. Now, it's off to the golf course.
Sunday, more fun with a lather catcher. Where did the razor go? Most of it is hidden behind the blade from this angle. The way the whole blade is visible might make this razor look dangerous, but it isn't. Kampfe Lather Catcher with Treet blade. That's Williams soap in the Old Spice mug. VdH boar brush. Cheap, but works. Have a good Sunday everybody!
