I know everyone has different opinions about upward passes. But simple question. Do you do them? why or why not?
Yes I do, and the simple answer is to remove whiskers. Of course the reasons behind that are more complicated, and as you watch Mantics videos about multiple passes, it will all be explained.
I don't normaly have a need to do an upward Against The Grain (ATG) pass. Some people do just to get that super smoothness. You might in order to reach some funky growing hairs, I do that when I use a straight instead of a DE. Just do whatever works for you. If you can reach the level of shave you want without ATG then super. Otherwise there isn't really a reason not to do an upwards pass. Hope that helped.
Yup. Actually I make three passes: WTG - with the grain, XTG - across the grain, ATG - against the grain. Why? I like to get as close and smooth as I can. Just remember, it's all about reduction. I do NOT try to take it all off with the first, or even second, pass.
I do an ATG pass most shaves. It gives a closer shave, which allows me to shave at night and still be presentable at the end of the work day the day after the shave.
Yep, I do the same thing. When I go with a fourth pass it is usually because I just want to prolong the experience and not because I have any whiskers left to cut.
I always finish with an ATG pass. Many times, I'll shave using just an ATG pass and forego the others. When I use other type passes it is just to prolong the shaving experience because, for me, the ATG pass is the one that really counts -- it's the one that provides the closest shave.
I never go up or against the grain just because it gives me lots of ingrown hairs. I know everyone is different but for me it's just too much of a bother so I go with and then across the grain but never against it.
I use an ATG because it removes the stubborn whiskers on my chin that would otherwise take two or three WTG/XTG passes to partially remove. That saves me the extra shaving and ends up easier on the skin, at least for me.
+ 1 I always shave upwards on the second pass, and my Futur sings on that pass as it does on my first downward pass, this helps me to a BBS !!
Thanks for the info guys! I think I'm going to try this technique soon to get an even closer shave than just a downward pass and an across pass. I didnt realize so many people cut against the grain. I'm gonna try it especially on my chin's stubborn hairs
i just tried this system. I can do downward, across and upward on my jaw and above really well. I just cant figure out how to do across or upward passes on my neck. It doesnt glide when i try, the blade just stops and almost cuts in. I'm using no pressure and a fresh lather, what is the problem? Any tips for shaving my neck and getting it to be baby smooth? maybe i need to try a new blade (the blades I'm using are old gillettes that i found in a pack with my grandpa's stuff)
The first thing that jumped out at me was that your angle may be off. Try adjusting that and see how it goes. As for my neck, I'll do my three passes as usual (W,X,ATG), then J-Hook (see mantic's advanced shaving techniques video).
On the bottom half of my neck, upward is WTG. So I always use some upward passes. I usually do a full three pass shave, so about everything on the face/neck gets at least one upward pass.
So you do 3 passes then J-hooking. I assume that means you lather your face 4 times? is that correct? or do you combine some of these passes on one lather? and I think the blades are still silver. If blades aren't exposed to water they can last a really long time right?
