    Hi all,
    Getting totally overwhelmed a bit here. I was wanting to try out a DE, and have settled on a Merkur HD 34c from all the great recommendations for a newbie. My wife got me a brush for Christmas last year, but I was still going through the last bit of shaving cream in the can that I have. I have no idea where to begin with looking for a simple soap/cream to start out with, but I would like it to score low on the cosmeticsdatabase.

    ** edit ** apparently I can't post links yet, search EWG or cosmetics database

    Not sure if the following qualifies for your needs, but as somebody with sensitive skin like myself, I'm yet to have found a cream that has caused problems for me... YMMW

    Ahoy there! ::mat Welcome aboard.

    Your search for off-the-shelf shaving products, I have learned, is largely dependent on where you live. If you care to share that bit of information, the recommendations, suggestions and advice, will flow freely and be infinitely more useful.

    Otherwise the internet is always a great place to start and Her Highness, JoAnna (Queen of Blades), formulates and has available in the TSD store, some of the best goodies, which I have put on my skin, thus far!:happy108

    I live in the Seattle, WA area, so lots of natural/organic products should be relatively easy to obtain. I am also not averse to purchasing items from the web with solid recommendations as well.

    Thanks for the link, looks like somebody has done most of the research my wife and I were going to do.

    I just read a post that said Soaps are pretty bullet proof, whereas creams can require a little more work/technique. Is this generally thought to be a true statement? I may reconsider my cream selection and try a soap first instead.

    My 2 pennies? I say that creams are easier for the new wet shaver.

    :signs046 Do what I did and start out with a box of samples of shave creams and soaps from the SDS.

    I personally haven't had any problems with creams or soaps, excepting a couple sub-par products (one cream and one soap). But, then again I think Williams and MWF are easy to lather. I'd say it's worth grabbing a cream and a soap when starting. I normally don't think of Speick as a beginner soap/cream as it has a very unique scent, which I personally love, but I wouldn't consider it a safe neutral scent. I do find Speick a great product, so if you like spicy/earthy scents it would be a good start, either the cream or shave stick.

    Some other good choices to start:
    Creams: Real Shave Company (Rite Aid), Kiss My Face, Proraso/CO Bigalow (Bath & Body Works)
    Soaps: Van Der Hagen Deluxe (green box, most Wal-Marts), TSD Shave Soap

    I suggest those soaps as they are IMHO extremely easy to lather and work better than most glycerin shave soaps.
