While I liked the lather and shave of Tabac, my wife nearly killed me when I used it. Irisch Moos and Palmolive keep things much more peaceful in my house.
I also purchased my first batch or Tabac a couple of weeks ago. I like the smell and it's a great cold-weather soap, but I don't get a great shave from it. For me, Proraso lathers better, lasts longer, and provides a much more lubricating shave than Tabac. I think it's largely overrated. I suppose it works better for some people, but it's just average for me.
While I haven't shaved with Tabac myself ( I don't have the patience standing in the shower whipping up a soap), I absolutely LOVE the smell of it. After reading these posts ... maybe I'm just weird ...
Shoebox and west coast carry it I believe. The scent is awesome but for whatever reason tallow soaps except for williams doesn't perform well for me. I do need the cream, as and edt though.
Jeff hooked me up with an order of the cream last night ... seems like he was quite eager to buy more shave stuffs ... Go figure!
They have the cream in the store I bought the some from too It smells better... Would you consider me a heretic if I buy a tube and squeeze it in the glass jar, because I must admit it looks bad-ass
Every soap you have will work differently. Tabac works differently than MWF or AOS. Take some time to play with it and figure it out. It is a classic for a reason. The scent takes a little getting used to but, as I found out it, will grow on you. With a little bit of patience, you will find out why so many wet shavers swear by Tabac. Enjoy,
:sihns011 Yeah, if you don't think Tabac lathers well you probably just aren't a soap guy. I haven't used a whole lot of soaps, but it's so far and away better than anything else I've used I can't imagine there being much of a step up from here. Unless there's a soap that will set you down in a barber's chair and straight shave you BBS itself. :happy102 But it boils down to personal preference--there's no right or wrong. Although I don't mind the scent meself, I totally get someone not caring for it. If you do want to get rid of it hit me up with a PM and maybe we can work out a trade or something.
Tabac is usually a love/hate soap. Not so much for the ability to lather, but the scent. Sort of like the Merkur Barberpole, Futur, and Vision razors. You will either love it the first time you use it or hate it. Tabac IMHO makes some of the best lather around and provides an excellent coating for a smooth shave. Of course YMMV. I do like the scent as well.
Don't love it, don't hate it. The smell is not pleasant, but it's tolerable, not too strong to begin with and fades quickly. The lather is excellent. I'll use up what I've got, and then probably not buy it again, unless the smell has grown on me by then.
I just got my Tabac about a week ago, my first soap.. GREAT lather and also the first product i've used for lathering directly on the face, works great! Smell is ok, dont really care that much though..
