I was in an antique store and stumbled across a couple nice looking DE razors, both looked perfect, possibly never used. Boxed, with what looked to be the original blades. Not too sure though. I was in a hurry so I didn't get exactly what they were, but one was a travel set for $30 that looked like this (not actual pic) The other was a Gillette for $30, this one I think (again not actual pic). It may have had Marlin blades: I'll try to get some shots of the actual items on friday. Until then, any thoughts? They look nice, but I wouldn't know what a decent price would be for them. Thanks
That second one is a Gillette NEW (1929-1940). They came in two versions. One had long, swooping combs, and the other had short, straight combs (much like a gillette old-type). This is the long comb version: Alone, they are pretty inexpensive ($5-12, depending on condition). However, in excellent condition, they are rare, because they weren't a luxury razor, but rather a workhorse razor. More importantly, very few are seen with their case. With a case, you'd expect to pay between $25 and $50 on the 'bay, depending on condition.
The first razor is a Tuckaway. One sold recently on Country Joe's Collectables for $22, without a case and in good condition. Both are priced well enough they're good grabs if you're interested in one or both.
You sure about that tuckaway.. that looks like a four piece travel razor I have two one German and the other US made. Fuzzy
As I can't see the pictures from work, I can't confirm right now. I picked out the old style head for certain, which could belong to either the tuckaway or 4-piece. Either way it's a good deal.
It's really impossible to know what you bought without the actual photos. The Tuckaway comes in a case shaped like your first photo, but the razor shown is not a Tuckaway but is a German travel razor like wchnu mentioned. The second photo is of the Gillette Red and Black set with the short tooth New. It's a great razor and if that's what you have that's a great find. Len
The little travel razor is a 4 piece set made by Merkur that they private labeled for several other companies...the most sought after version seems to be the milkwashed white knurled Hoffritz version. The Koenig, Cosmo, unbranded etc look almost identical but don't seem to get a lot of interest. The modern Merkur travel razor still uses the same design but comes in a leather or plastic case. Nice little shavers though!
