I really like the gillette toggle razor but all I can find on ebay are gold ones. I would really rather have a silver one so my question is: If you had a gold toggle would you replate it ? And in what material would you replate it in? Who would you go to for replating ?
Hank, you may check with the guys over at Razoremporium.com and ask if they might do it? I have bought reconditioned razors from them in the past and been very happy with the results. However the razors were always replated in the original finish. I do not know if this makes a difference?
Hey Mang....re-plate it in whatever blows your hair back. Probably Rhodium? There are a few threads around here about re-plating....here is one of the more often recommended: http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showpost.php?p=317690&postcount=3
<GRIN> I wouldn't replate unless I planned to keep it forever and it was brassed beyond recognition especially a toggle.
Rhodium will be the metal most recommended. Personally I like nickel , to me, its hard , shiny and inexpensive and I identify it with traditional shaving. If you look at Michael Ham's blog Leisureguy he features pics of many of the razors he has had replated , his fave replate metals seem to be Rhodium and Gold. Razor Emporium did his razors.
Ah nuts! Now I'm dreaming about having a couple of my Gillettes replated in Rhodium! Does the RAD ever ever stop?
My preference is silver, nickel or rhodium plated razors. Having said that I don't believe in replating at all, not even brassed ones. I certainly wouldn't replate a Toggle. But it's your razor and I would think nickel would be the best choice as far as longevity considering the cost of rhodium. Len
Thank you every one for your thoughts on this matter I haven't gotten a toggle yet but I know that all I will be able to find is a gold one and I was thinking ahead. I've never had a razor replated so I was seeking the wise advice of those here.
