My new "cranberry" scuttle, made by Robert Becker, arrived today. Which obviously means it had to be put to the lather test... Look at that fluffy, gorgeous lather! Aside from helping in making great lather, the scuttle retains heat very well. You can't see it in my pictures but it has a spout and a rubber plug that keeps the water and heat inside the scuttle under and surrounding the lather bowl. My lather stayed warm the whole shave which consisted of one WTG pass, one ATG pass and one on each jawline XTG touch-up pass. It also came with a matching "cranberry" lid. And FYI, I got this awesome lather from a $1.50 shaving cream: Dalan D'men Cool. I highly recommend Robert and his very nicely priced scuttles. I've seen other more well known scuttles go for minimum twice what he charges for the ones he makes.
Thanks Dale! I did/do both. For my creams, I face lather sometimes and sometimes I use a vintage enamel spittoon - made in France - just like this one: I bought it via eBay France when I first started wet shaving because it has the lid, it's a good size and I thought it'd be perfect for making lather. But I never got the kind of lather seen in the scuttle photos nor did I have any kind of heat retention. There's a spiral groove in the scuttle whereas the spittoon is just smooth-like-glass enamel. I think the groove helps a lot in making the lather explode. In addition to creams, I do enjoy an assortment of shave sticks which of course would be face lathering (do people use shave sticks in a bowl?).
I almost got one of those before. They do look nice and very functional. But I've been wanting to see what all the fuss was about in using a scuttle so I went with one of scuttle creations instead since I already had other razor and brush stands. Thank you sir.
That's a nice scuttle you've got there for sure! From the pics though I'd call it the watermelon, 'cause it looks like a slice with the seeds and all, YUMMY!
That's a nice one Jody. I really like the color. I hope it provides you with many years of great lather.
Thanks guys. I'm thinking of getting another one made by him in a red/blue color combo - for college football season... Ole Miss colors.
Yes, several times. Love it. Don't know how I've went this long without a scuttle. I've seen other people say they heated their water on the stove or in the microwave but I don't see why, unless their water heater is set low, because my hot tap water stayed hot in the scuttle the whole shave and kept my lather very warm. Since I've started using a scuttle, I've had the most awesome lather (as seen in the pictures). All this time I thought I was getting good lather... until the scuttle. Now I know better. So I definitely recommend a scuttle, specifically a Robert Becker scuttle... half the price of others and does the job its intended to do.
No thinning of the lather? That's the problem I've always had with the Redneck Scuttle - and therein may lie the problem.
One thing I've learned - thanks Mantic! - is to make sure the brush is fully loaded with lather. Often times we think it is because, well, it's covered in lather... but on inside the hair in the middle and on towards the handle, there's very little if any lather. So when you're lathering in a bowl/mug/scuttle, mash that brush down several times in the process to wick the lather up into the brush. Then when you get to that 3rd, 4th pass and your lather is looking thin, you wrap your thumb and index finger around the knot at the handle and "milk" down. You'll see lots of lather come out to the end/tip and be ready to go.
True. But I don't have a problem with the lather thinning any other time, only when I've used the scuttle.
Jody, that's a cool looking razor. Where could I get one? I looked for a review on a Darwin but didn't see one.
