Going to use it tomorrow and was wondering about the aggresiveness. I've been shaving with a 40's SS, how does it compare. I was thinking I would start with a Derby. Any blade recomendations gentlemen? Thanks

No idea, but here's hoping it's a smooth shave! :eatdrink004

These are more aggressive /efficient razors for me, compared to a 40's ss. I like them a lot. You'll probably have to adjust your angle a bit. You're not supposed to see the marks of the teeth in the lather. Take care and you will be rewarded!

I don't own a Super Speed and can't compare the two, but I found the Derby/New combo to too aggressive for my newbie face.

If you've got some shaves under your belt, you might be able to tame this duo just fine, but I'm finding I'm not a huge fan of Derby blades. They seem rough and eager to leave my face feeling raw in places. I haven't tried a lot of blades in my short time shaving with a safety razor, but Derby has quickly made it to my proceed-with-caution list.

Although, when I put a Derby in my Tech, it calmed down quite a bit. Still some rawness, but far less biting. I'm interested to hear what you think about your shave with the Derby/New pairing. The New is such a great razor.

The 30's NEW is a viscous beast that will try and eat your face.

Not really, but they are more aggressive then a SS. The right angle won't take long to find. Just take your time and go lightly and all will be fine. It may take you a few shaves to sort things out, but once you do, you will be rewarded with a great shaver.

I have both and find the NEW to be a bit more aggressive and the balance is different. It takes some familiarization, but is capable of a very close shave.

Thanks for the input gentlemen, its going to be a day of firsts. My TSD ISZ+ menthol is supposed to arrive today and I plan to use it with the NEW! I'll post my report later.

PS Any recommendations for a blade in the NEW?
    Thanks

My New is much more aggressive than most of my other razors. It compares to my Fat Boy dialed up to 8 or 9. I prefer mild - forgiving blades in the New, such as Crystal. I like Derby's in my Fat Boy and Slim, but not in the New.

I'll add another voice to saying a NEW is a very aggressive razor. My normal blade for a NEW is a Crystal Persona/IP though occasionally I'll go with a red pack Persona and on a rare occasion I find a feather also works well (very unexpected). I'm not a Derby fan in any razor, but hopefully it works well for you.

Just pay extra attention to using NO PRESSURE and you'll be fine.

I have a NEW and it's just too aggressive for my skin to handle. I will say that they are beautifully built and tough as a tank though.

I have used both before i pifed my SS. The new in my case is my favorite razor. It beats everything I have tried... It works with voskods and me wonderful. Pretty aggressive set up but gives me a great 2 pass shave.

It is more aggressive than a SS but it is still a great razor to use. Hope you give it a fair shot if not you can easily find a buyer :D. Or someone to trade it with.

Nothing like it for mowing off a full beard.

    Anything but a Derby.

Just kidding. But don't be too quick to blame the razor if your first shave doesn't go just as smooth as you would like. Take your time and try it again. If it still isn't going well, try a different blade. If that doesn't work, put the razor on the back shelf and try it again this Thanksgiving. Perfecting your technique for a few months can work wonders.

    Hope it goes well!

I got a new a couple of months ago

I only started using it a few weeks ago, but love it. It is really great with a feather to shave off a couple days worth of growth at the end of the weekend. I thought it would be to aggressive when I first started using it, but it was just a matter of adjusting my technique a little bit. Using the New style with a feather has made me better at shaving. I still get really good results using IP, or even Astra or 7 oClocks with it also.

Well I shaved with the NEW and a Derby and my face is in one piece! I actually had a great shave, maybe my best shave ever :D. I admit I was a little concerned with the warnings about the Derby but I got a BBS and no weepers. My face seems to love the Derby, YMMV! Plus I used my M bomb and ISZ soap for the 1st time.

Well, I tried My New. Used the Shark blade which I love, and it was a little tough "aggressive" for me and ended up with some weepers or nicks as you guys say, but not that bad. Then had the rocket idea to change the blade to a Merkur, yes a mild blade, but cut so smooth and no nicks and what a difference, wow. Now I'm thinking hmm, maybe go to the Red and try that...
But love that razor...Crystal is made by Reds or vice versa so maybe that will work too. Don't like the Derby's in general. Also tried my SS and with Gillette Black and that was a great shave too.
Having fun with the all the new razors....

The Gillette New is a great razor. It's not aggressive. It only appears that way if you don't have the proper technique. That's true of razors as mild as the Gillette Tech. My favorite razors and my best shaves come from the Old Type and the New. When using an open comb the head of the razor should be more flat against your face and you should not leave comb tracks in the lather. If you leave tracks what you're doing is scraping and pulling your beard and not cutting it. You end up with a raw shave and possible weepers. I only use Red IP's and only need two passes for a close shave.

Give this a try and enjoy your New.
