Hard to believe September's almost here already. That means we're starting off our first scheduled theme week of the next 12 months. Adjustable Week will start the week of 9/5 (yup, that's this coming Monday) and run until Sunday. Again, you are under no obligation to participate. This is all in fun. Take part all week, or just a day or two. Be sure to post here and let the rest of us know how you adjust - lock and leave it? Or twist and tweak it? Just so you can get ready, Williams Week will be starting 9/19. Yeah, I broke down and bought a puck.
Theme weeks weren't this formal before. I'll be participating when I'm at home. Adjustable razors don't make good travel razors IMHO. You know, I just realized the only adjustable I still have is my Fatboy. Guess it's Fatboy week for me (I see an OOC post coming).
Today's the day we start Adjustable Week. Post up here and/or in the SOS thread. Today I used my Merkur Futur set at a tad over 2.5. Dropped in a Dorco ST-301 blade and went at it. Dare I say it? BBS? YES! I don't like to use that phrase too often, mainly because it doesn't happen too often (by my standards). A fantastic shave. Here's some advice for those who may be new to using an adjustable razor. Take it for what it's worth... Day 1 - set your razor at one notch above the lowest setting (low = mild, higher = more aggressive), lock it, leave it, complete your entire shave at that one setting. That means ALL your passes. Evaluate. Day 2 - if day 1 was too mild, take it up another notch, lock it, leave it, complete your entire shave. Evaluate Day 3 - if still too mild, take it up another notch, lock it, leave it, etc... Continue this each day until you reach that "one notch too much" setting. Back it down a notch, lock it and leave it. Now some folks who are experienced with adjustables like to take that first pass of the shave mild, then crank it to wild with each pass after that. Some like to start out aggressive, then tone it down after each pass. Me, I've found what works for each razor - they're locked down at that setting and that's where they stay. Again, for the new guy or gal, I recommend you get your technique down and find out where the "sweet spot" is on your adjustable before you twist and tweak during the shave.
Happy Menthol Monday From Florida! Adjustable Week Day One: Hot Shower RAB Scuttle Chubbz I Poraso Green Tub Fat Boy - Slammed To 9 Voskhod (1) Cold Water Rag Poraso Cream A/S 4 Passes = 5 Blade, Off The Hook, Bang A Gong, Inter-Galactic BBS!
1976 Super Adjustable and day 2 with the Treet Dura Sharp blade. Vintage Surrey soap and brush finished off with some vintage Old Spice after shave.
Used my '62 Slim today. I normally keep it locked at 6, but this morning I bumped it up to 7; 3 passes and some touch up. Darn fine shave, if I do say so myself. Just may have to keep it at 7 for a while.
Spent the last two days using the Tforc coated industrial slim set at 5. Yesterday is was a great shave. Today there was a little irritation, but not much. I am guessing the blade I am using (Super-Max Platinum) may not last the best in this razor. I may put one more shave on it to finish off the blade, but have a new T2 I want to get in the rotation. Although it is tempting to call the blade dead. On the other hand, I just ordered 200 of them based on how great they did in another razor. So maybe I will tough the blade out because I am obstinate.
Broke these out of the display cabinet for this week.. birth year and quarter adjustables. Long handle for my face, short handle for my head - both set on 7 and staying there. Adjustable week is on!
Will start the week with the slim adjustable locked on 9, with a Derby blade. Will alternate with a Progress starting on 5 but may dare to slide up to an 8, just for the thrill of it with a Feather.
well i only have an adjustable razor so i'm in started monday with my normal set up hot shower castel and forbes lime shaving cream vintage badger brush merkur futur feather blade (2) cold water rinse with hazel nivea balm great shave on monday morning i really enjoyed it. the feather seemed to dull up enough that i could do some extra work with it. i set it to 9 for the first pass the dropped it down to 2 for the next 2 passes and ended up with a great shave tonight i went for the same set up with the feather on use # 3 but i think i pushed the feather too far for my beard. i set it at 1 for the first pass and set it to 3 because it seemed like it was hardly doing anything. well big mistake that just ended up in a terrible shave. damn these wirey whiskers. maybe my technique is bad? i can't wait to get more toys so i can switch it up and have something new to use.
Might wanna check the high setting on that Futur. I don't think it'll go to 9 Bad technique? How long have you been shaving? Too much fiddling with the adjustable, maybe? If your technique is bad, I would suggest you get it down before you "switch it up and have something new to use."
'61 Fatboy in the batter's box today - a gift from a co-worker. As I did yesterday with the Slim, today I dialed the FatBoy up a notch to 7. I can only attribute it to better technique. Simply a fantastic shave with super results.
Happy Wednesday From Florida! Hot Shower RAB Scuttle Chubbz II Klar Kabinett Futur @ 3 Voskhod (4) Cold Water Rag Poraso Cream A/S 3 Passes = DFS! Normally, I slam all of my adjustable razors wide open, and I have done so with the Futur as well. I have found that the Futur delivers great shaves no matter what the setting, but I have decided on 3 for now. Have a great day Ya'!!
oops i mean 6. ; ) i've been using a DE for a few months now. i pretty much keep it on 3. i figured it was time to mess with another setting and see how the results were.
