woke up to a very cool morning today (temperature-wise), that will help the firefighters and emergency workers in the area, temp is not supposed to get very high today, and while that is very helpful, rain would be great

The cool air was almost like a slap in the face when I stepped out this morning. Actually had to put on something with sleeves, and pull out one of my toques.

The wife and I are considering getting a dog this coming fall/winter. Since the wife has allergy issues, we're after a hair dog (by experience she is good with them). Looking at hair dogs that match our personalities and lifestyle, we're leaning toward a standard Schnauzer. We've had a few friends who owned miniature schnauzers, but not the standards. I just know some of the hikes, walks, runs, etc. I like to do would be little too much (though not by a great deal) for a mini and I just generally prefer medium to large dogs. Given the size of our yard and house, I'd like to stick to a medium sized dog. So, any thoughts about standard schnauzers? Any dog I should be considering that I've missed? Yeah, also needs to be a bread that tends to be good with cats. FYI, Standard Schnauzers are good with cats, but not kittens. Kittens are too close in size to rodents that Schnauzers were bread to hunt.

The Schnauzers I have met have been good dogs, though they do have grooming hassles, my basset I have does good with monthly nail clippings, weekly ear cleanings, and a slicker brush. If I was going to get a hair dog, I'd get a standard poodle, but that's just me, it would have to be the big poodle, can't stand the smalls ones.

In a weird twist, I'm actually feeling somewhat productive today. Whoever sent that specific prayer up, thanks!

I don't think brushing every day or two and a hair cut twice is year is too much grooming hassle (plus nail clipping that goes with any dog). It's a little more than the labs I grew up with, but nothing that's a big deal. Plus the daughter will happily do the brushing part.

I've never "clicked" with poodles. That and most poodle owners have a personality that just doesn't mesh with me. You always seem to meet fellow breed owners and they like to talk. Each breed has personality tendencies in its owners and I'd like to avoid the few breeds where I won't enjoy the company of the majority of those owners. Please note I'm not talking all owners of any breed and I don't think Poodle owners are bad people.

Well is all but dried up. Had Jim come over and help me get the cap off and look insided, the footvalve was just below the surface and the pump had lost it's prime. My oldest brother came by and he and I tied a cinderblock to the line and carefully lowered it into the well, making the footvalve sink another 6 inches or so. We primed the pump with a 5 gallon bucket, and managed to get water pressure again. We might get another couple of days out of it, and the well does appear to be seeping water from the ground slowly, so hopefully it hasn't completely died. I've got 14 gallons of city water from my other brother that will help mitigate need, but

We need rain in a terrible, terrible way.

    A) Schnauzers - we have a mini, and when he's not being a yappy-yap PITA, he's a good, loyal dog. Very protective of the kids, and the house in general. Gets along with the Shih tzu and two cats, though admittedly probably about as enthusiastically as I get along with said critters...
I'd prefer a standard, or even giant schnauzer, but seeing as this one was actually given to us (my wife did tutoring for a student during her college time, and the parents bred and sold schnauzers, she fell in love with this one and instead of payment she accepted the puppy....and thus the downward spiral started...).
It wouldn't have been my first choice of a dog, but he's been a good pet these 11 years so far.

    B) Micah, don't forget offer still stands if ya'll need a shower, or if you need to come over to shave, or whatever. You can come get some more water if needed

    C) We do, indeed, need rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain,....*

*we need rain from our little perspective, we never know what our Father in Heaven is showing us, or preparing us for. We may indeed be getting exactly what we need, but we can't see it from our non-eternal perspective

True enough. I've found myself thinking lately that all this drought has meant at least that the bahia grass seems to have finally met it's match, and so too has all this annoying wild privet I have growing on my property. But still--I really, really, really want my well.

The well is seeping, so that's a good sign. And at least I do have a well. There are places in this world where they get their water out of a ditch, so I have that to be thankful for. I also have friend who will come over at the drop of a hat and help me lift the cover off my well. And I have friends who will let me shower and shave at their house--even stay the night if I feel the need. I have brothers who will let me have water and who know enough about wells to be able to help me get mine working again. I'm truly blessed. Sometimes our hardships are really just mildly firm dinghies.

All that said, if I thought it would bring rain, I'd run naked around the WalMart parking lot.

I might just do that anyway.

Glad to hear that there is some positive things to be thankful for in your situation.

I guess I should be checking the people of Walmart page for updates from now on?

I almost feel bad posting my minor water issues after reading what Micah is going through. Still, here I go:

Last night TWGW noticed a small water stain in the ceiling above the dryer. It was spongy, so I cut the drywall to see where the water was coming from. Turned out the leak was from the drain in my daughter's shower. She immediately assumed it was her faulted and went into total melt-down mode. An hour later she had calmed down enough to talk to and I let her know what I found during the fit, which was that the gasket had never been installed correctly to begin with and the only thing stopping water from leaking for the last 26 years was a bead of plumber's putty.

Now, off to work early after a long night. I feel exhausted already - it's going to be a long day.

Well, if you do this, remember to take pictures.

I just got off work. I'm going to go buy a case of water and take it to the extension office today for the fire fighters fighting the wild fires.

Okay: price hike, split plans, losing major studio, and now this.....I'm starting to reconsider Netflix

Actually, this one seems pretty reasonable to me. It's not like you can't stream on multiple devices, you just can't stream on multiple devices at once. They're having to drive down the cost of distribution anyway they can, and lowering bandwidth demands seems like a good start. Besides, it was already in the terms of service, they just haven't been enforcing it. Which is why there was rampant abuse. One person would sign up, and then share their account info with 3 or 4 other people. That's hardly fair to Netflix, or to those customers who play by the rules. I'm oddly at peace with this latest announcement.

Stopping the sharing of the same account...no problem, I agree, that shouldn't be happening.

However, if the kids are in the living room watching something, and I want to watch something in the bedroom or on my computer....

I understand the reason, and this alone wouldn't be reason enough to blink, but it sure seems like a lot of negatives lining up in the "cons" side of a NF account.

But, I'll admit it's just part of the growing pains they're starting to have going from video startup to major player, and the helluva good deal they used to be is probably not going to last much longer, even beyond the recent pricing/package changes.
