I got my Tabac shave soap today. I'm not sure how I would describe the fragrance, but I like it. Where it's really standing out for me is the lather I got using it. Completely different than the glycerine soaps I've been using.

It lathered really easy for me. Maybe it's just that I'm getting better at making a lather, I don't know, I'm still new. The quality just seemed really good to me, and it didn't try to evaporate.

I'm going to keep using this stuff until Monday the 19th, when I'm going to try using Williams with everyone.

Tabac is a love / hate thing. I love it. Tabac is a super easy to lather soap with a fantastic scent (for me) I have a bowl of it, a home made stick, the A/S and the cream. Tabac is very nice for me.

I'm glad it works for you guys cause I fail miserably with this soap, it just doesn't play nice with me. I love the scent though.

It took me a while to learn how to lather anything. I have very hard water and it seems to take a lot of soap, I load.......when I think I have enough, I load some more. Some day, maybe I'll fork out the more money for MWF, but right now it's at that price level where I cringe every time I see it.

If you like Tabac I would score a Old Spice soap , they seem in the same ball park IMHO. Comparing MWF to Tabac , I have found Tabac more drying than MWF, M has the moisturizing down cold. The scent of MWF is more subtle than Tabac.

Tabac is a great soap and a great cream! I use the cream and Jeff uses the soap .. Fabulous scent all around.

Nick, I'm glad you like Tabac, it should do quite well for you and last a long time.

I also noticed MWF's lather is more stable, I've never had any issue with it wanting to dry out or having to add water before the next pass.

Yeah, the soap is huge compared to other the other soaps I have. I think I'm going to start looking at replacing my brush next. I sorta got this bug where I couldn't keep myself from buying soaps.

    I'm over it now.....for now.

There is just so much to try, and soap is relatively inexpensive, it's pretty easy to stock up for years.

Yeah Nick, when you see how long triple milled soaps last its quite ridiculous... I have some that are a year or so old and haven't put a dent in them with my rotation...

As for brushes, stick with your boar till you have some money to buy something nice and something you really want, rather than settle on something because it fits a price range.

Tabac was one of the first good soaps I got...well that my brother bought for me. I loved it and it worked great! I used it on a daily basis until it was gone. I am now about 70-80% done my puck of MWF (been working on it since Feb).

I get my MWF from Connaught Shaving (going to be putting a new order in soon). It's the cheapest place I've seen so far that doesn't have ridiculously grossed up shipping prices to Canada. It's about $20 for the ceramic dished soap, $15 for a wooden bowl, and around $7 for a refill puck (just noticed the refill for Tabac is more than MWF ).

Yeah, I wasn't really planning on getting the cheapest brush I could find, and I would like to try a badger.

Still hard when you're just starting out and you don't really know what it is you want exactly..

True, but buy in confidence knowing that if you buy a brand discussed in good terms here at the Den, if you decide you don't like it, there shouldn't be too much of a problem selling it to or trading it with someone here at TSD. Much of the fun with all of this is trying new things. Some things work, some don't. But you won't know until you try.

I have yet to suffer from buyers remorse from any of the stuff that I bought!

Glad to hear it. I only had remorse when I bought my Semogue Owners Club brush...but after about 2 months it finally broke in (remorse gone!), but still...it seems to be a bit touchy with me presently (I swear it has a mind of its own...and it thinks it is my master :smiley respect::yoda).

When I was looking to branch out from the one brush I had (Omega Boar), I spent most of my time on B&B. I had wanted a badger but the brushes they discuss were WAY out of my price range (they still are too). My brother pointed my in the direction of the Penworks line (my brother buys knots from Tony) and I took to them right away and was gifted one for Christmas! They are fairly priced, they do cost more than a boar, but I got mine with Finest badger hair, and it feels amazing!

The one thing I must say is to consider what Steve just mentioned. I find that the brushes (heck...anything) discussed here on TSD are much more reasonably priced, and the members are more well versed in giving educated oppinions on a wider selection of products.

Tony's brushes are a good starting point if you want to try a badger brush, but nobody ever mentions Simpson's Colonel X2L or Commodore X2 or even Duke 1 and 2, all of which are within the same price range as Tony's Penchetta line....

I don't think anything out there can compete with Simpson's best badger hair for value at that level really, and supposedly what they're using now is of the utmost quality they've had.

Its funny because for me, its the exact opposite and one of the things I don't like about TSD, nobody even seems to talk about or mention higher end brushes, and when I started to get some of my brushes, I wasn't exactly made to feel welcome for owning them.

Granted things have gotten better, but it still seems people throw out the conservative Rudy Vey/TGN recommendation without even realizing some of the handmade entry level British brushes are even there and of higher quality for what you purchase, you just need to know which ones to look for.

I am glad to hear that things are getting better; I haven't been around long enough to know this, or two compare price points of brushes. Your mention of the cheaper Simpsons is good news to me. Right now I'm still at my point in life where there wouldn't even be a doghouse for me to go to if I bought a Kent or Chubby. To make it worse I am getting overcome with a desire to have/try a Simpson; since my brother who owns a Chubby 2 lives in Japan, I highly doubt he would let me borrow his for a while, when it would be out of his posession for several weeks due to the post, etc. So I see myself looking for an alternative way to get one (aka - parents...Christmas). What you mentioned has made me think of a few questions, but those are better saved for another thread.

Wow, I've always felt that TSD was one of the most open minded and welcoming shave related communities. There though is a love here for what may be called "lower end products"more here than other sites. Arko rules and Cade drools.

To the OP Tabac is a great soap. Exceptional value, if purchased in the refill puck.

Like I said, it has gotten better, and it doesn't apply to every single member either.

I should add, even JoAnna has brought this up in another thread before, but I don't want to continue in derailing Nick and his joy of Tabac!
