My wife and I both really enjoy Phantom of the Opera, but it is a musical about an opera, not an opera itself.

Rented Pirates of the Caribbean 4 yesterday and watched it. Man I love those movies! This one was better because Kiera Knightly wasn't in it. I would have to say that 'On Stranger Tides' is equal to 'At World's End' for being my favorite of this series.

Really? It seemed kinda "forced" to me..."forced" in the way of "let's make another movie to capitalize on the money we can rake in".
I did like it, but I didn't think it was as good as the others. Maybe I was just having a bad day. Not sure, really. Maybe the opening threw me off too much.
And yes, Penelope Cruz was an attractive addition, but I enjoyed looking at KK, too ;)

I think the biggest problem was the massively reduced role of the monkey, though....

Here's something to put everyone "In the Mood":

Harry's a pretty obscure singer, you've probably never heard of him:

I agree that Disney was milking their cash cow with this film, and the monkey should have had a bigger role! I think part of the reason I liked it so much is because it seemed like a somwhat independant film from the others. Of course one would need to know about the prior movies to understand it all, but although it was a sequal to the third, it didn't really have that feel because of all the new characters being introduced. I'm happy that all of the Pirates sequals havent really been a complete flop...like most are. They've all been pretty decent movies.

this is true. Any of them could most likely stand on their own as it's own movie, although there are some aspects that depend on the prior movie for it to make sense, most notably in 2 and 3, to understand why they have to go get Jack.
But that is a good observation, and the fourth, although a sequel, does stand almost completely on its own, besides character development from the first films

hmmm, seems we have some new mods, according to the "Staff Online Now" box on the home page...

I just want a pirate movie that's about real pirates. I don't want talking squid people, mermaids, or voodoo priestesses. No zombies, no "ghost ships" or anything supernatural. I don't think that's too much to ask.

true. but then Disney wouldn't be interested in footing the bill

On Stranger Tides is almost there...well half way anyway. Blackbeard was a real pirate AKA Edward Teach. Google him and it's crazy to see how much fact Disney included for his character in the film...physical appearance anyway.

I heard that they did a better job of making things somewhat historical on this one. I'm familiar with Teach, he was a serious Billy Badbeard of the Nth degree. If the reports about his death are true, he lived up to most of the legend that surrounds him. A few years ago, there was a miniseries about Blackbeard that was pretty good, it just needed a bigger budget.

My point is, that true Pirate history is so full of rich material, and the stories of some of them are so compelling without embellishment, that it saddens me to see hollywood jazz up the stories with fantasy hokum.

That is a really good point. Another thing I just thought of is that a 'true to the fact' movie would still contain some of the legends about pirates, it would just be a completely different light. Such as mermaids being a figment of someones imagination, etc.. I like where you're coming from! The sad thing is it probably won't happen as everything now is all fantasy/sci-fi based.

More new mods?? They just added 3 more in the oatmeal club maybe a week or so ago. Maybe more than three were added but I am in the dark.

Maybe if we behave better they won't need them?

    Naah

Yeah, you could do mermaids in a dream sequence, or just in glimpses in the water. Sea monsters could be included as shadows in lightning flashes during a storm or something.

Then that's probably it, I just haven't seen anything about it, only noticed new names in the "Staff Online Now" box
