Tons of Iggy songs to choose from, but I really don't want to watch him dancing around shirtless. Hence, we're going for a cover song: Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Passenger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHkr4pb8Hcc&feature=related
This simply made me giggle! Emily Wells "Passenger" Live She looks as if she is trying out everything in the music store!
Unless someone knows the lyrics, they would have a hard time with the tie in. I will help out the others if they listen to this version. You Do Something To Me - Doris Day
Helen Merrill:"You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" The connection here is the obvious "You Do To" /"You'd Be To". Also the not so obvious; both tunes written by Cole Porter. Helen Merrill 1st recorded this with the great Clifford Brown in the early '50's (Clifford was the genius trumpet soloist whose stylings have had a major influence on every Jazz trumpet player since and broke the Jazz world's heart by dying in a car accident at the age of 25 while sleeping in the back seat). Here she's re-recorded it in the '90's as a tribute to Clifford. After Wallace Rooney takes the trumpet solo, then Kenny Barron piano. Then Wallace Rooney, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell, and Lou Soloff play Clifford's original solo in unison. Really very nice...Of course the original with Clifford is better, but this tribute was nicely done and everyone on the date truly wanted to show their love and respect for "Brownie". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snftt-oncX4&feature=related
Wow! When the gents started in unison what a punch. The worse thing about Clifford Brown's death is the fact the he was clean. Did not use drugs and took care of himself. That may have been just as much of a shock to people as well. He was so talented and did not succumb to all the bad influences in the music business at the time. Let's try the original for comparison shall we. Helen Merrill with Clifford Brown / You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To
And this is the last tune he played on this earth...This recording of Donna Lee was made on a portable tape deck at a Jam Session in a Philly PA music store...At the end you hear Cliff say, "I really must go now"...He went outside and got in the backseat of a car to sleep with Richie Powell and his wife in the front seat, leaving for an engagement at the "Bee-Hive" in Chicago. Richie's wife had her learner's permit and wanted to drive and there was a discussion about it. And Clifford said that this was a business trip and not a joke, and he wasn't riding with them if she was going to learn how to drive in the middle of a rainey night on a cross country trip. So when they left Richie was driving...Just a few hours later the car skidded off the PA turnpike, killing all three occupants. Richie's wife was behind the wheel...Apparently, after Clifford went to sleep, Richie and his wife changed places...This is not assigning blame...It was just a senseless tragedy that took all their lives. The next day was Clifford's wife's birthday, and their 2nd year anniverary. She normally traveled with him but stayed at her parents house this time, because of the recent birth of their son Clifford Jr. When his wife got the call, she thought it was Clifford calling to wish her Happy Anniversary... Sorry for the sad story but for those just learning and listening to Clifford for the first time, it may help to understand how much this young man was loved and how poinant his passing was...He set a glowing example of the new hip, well educated, no drugs or alcohol, type Jazz musician. He once told Coltrane, that before partaking in any activity he would generally ask himself, "Is this going to improve me as a musician" and if the answer came back no, he would change plans for something that would...A very warm young man of whom Benny Golson said, "Some people are liked by all they meet, Clifford was loved by all who met him..." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVzU1yvFCh8
I can follow both the Jazz and the Jam themes. Let go with my favorite Jazz guitarist: Marc Antoine "Paris Jam" Live In DC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXUZc0-inoo
This is a home style video of a "Paris Jam" from just a few months ago in Paris... These kids are ridiculous...As Erik can attest to; Jazz is alive and well in Paris. Luigi the 1st sax solo, is 25 years old and has been playing like this for years... He's so popular in Europe, it's like he's an old-timer at 25...lol... Last month I saw some college age saxophonists having a contest in Spain playing some of Luigi's solos... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJl4c8m1o5M&feature=related
Since we're doing anatomy let's go with Jonathan Coulton - Brains http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjcH2UmK1uo
