I was informed today by Ed at Weber Razors that they have their store up and running now and are open for business. http://www.weberrazor.com/ The razors are 100% stainless steel and made in the USA. The head is made of "Diamond-like Carbon" coated stainless steel. Very interesting looking razor. They also sell just their handle that should fit most 3 piece razors. Razor sells for $55 and the handle $20. Thought I'd pass it along in case you were interested.
I've ordered one and will take one for "The Team". I'll review it once I have it in hand. I'm curious how it shaves plus I'm not familiar with its "Diamond-like Carbon" head that coats the SS head. Here's info on that if anyone's interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond-like_carbon. It's interesting that other all stainless steel razors such as the Feather and iKon are all substantially more expensive.
I'd like to have one of each. Can't afford them, though. The look of the Feather stainless makes me giddy.
I am interested, not because I'm looking to buy any non-vintage razor at the moment, but just because I like to know what's out there. That black head on the stainless handle doesn't look good to me, though. Matter of personal preference, I suppose. Will be interested to read anyone's account of how it shaves.
It does seem to be a little proportionally challenged. I've always wonder when I run across SS not polished or worse, coated. You can cover up a lot of stuff with a good coating. All-in-all, it seems like an aerospace design for form, fit and function.
It is odd looking that's for sure. I like the dual head function of the latest iKons and the Feather is just classic looking.
I saw their announcement on Twitter. I prefer the open comb original model they had when they came on the scene last year but even it had some quality control issues in the finish, and the big W in the middle of the head cap wasn't appealing either. This new one with the coating on the head pieces... hrrmm. Don't like the looks of it but it could turn out to be the latest greatest. Doubt it though. Not with the 2011 R41 still in production.
Looks like an iKon Stainless long handle with a Merkur head. and it's a little unbalanced. My eye wants black handle and silver head. But that could very well be that I am biased.. I just bought a Merkur 20c which has a black anodized handle and traditional Merkur head. hmmm wonder how it would look if I mated the black Merkur handle with the black Weber head? Someone get on and do a review!!
The handle looks more like a Sabi to me. If I could just get the razor head, I would give it a try. But I have no interest in that handle. It looks like you can buy just the handle for $20. Dunno... Will have to look at it on a real computer. (after viewing on a computer instead of a "smart" thing...) oh well... I purchased the handle. with shipping, it will run $25. But compare that to the cost of an iKon handle. My iKon extended tech handle is one of my favorites.... maybe this will get a lot of use. Still not tempted enough to buy the whole razor. Maybe it will be a wish list item... it would look sharp with that black Merkur handle... (which I don't have)
Okay, I'm confused... You started with saying you would like just the head and have no interest in the handle and then bought the handle? What made you change your mind? Or, did I misread... ?
my opinion changed when viewing the handle on a real computer instead of a "smart" phone. $20 for a stainless handle is a good deal when stainless handles often run twice that. It looked like crud on the phone. On the computer it looked like a decent handle. On the phone it looked like a grey stick of a fossilized turd. hence the "(after viewing on a computer instead of a "smart" thing...)"
I dunno. The handle looks too skinny, even on my computer. And I don't understand why they coated the head pieces. If its stainless steel, that just seems like a gimmick to me. Why in the world would you coat stainless steel with anything?
One reason is tolerances. If you are having difficulty producing steel parts to the required dimensions, you can produce the pieces undersized and "coat" them up to spec. 1,2,or 3 coats until the required tolerance is met.
The handle arrived today. I see on other forums where members are getting their razors today as well. Its a stainless handle, I like the length and it isn't too thin. Is the knurling as good as on other handles such as iKon or BRW? No, it isn't as clean, but it is still a good grip and feels good in my ginormous hands. Will see how it feels tomorrow on a shave.
I got my razor today. I'll give it a go tomorrow and post a review of how it shaves. I put a blade in it today to see how it looked in the head and it seems to me there's a fair amount of blade showing. I'm expecting a somewhat aggressive shave, but we'll see.
I have BRW handles on all my razors and the BRW handles are more substantial. The diameter and thickness of the BRW handle is greater and the heft and weight is much greater with the BRW as well. You can definitely see tell by holding it that it's all SS. The knurling on the Weber is very good. There should be no problems keeping a grip on this handle when wet.
Had my first shave with the Weber tonight. Here's my impressions. Feel/Weight: I replaced the stock SS handle with a BRW "Slim" handle. Nothing wrong with the stock SS handle from Weber, but I just have a love for Bob's handles. The head on the Weber is a bit smaller than say an EJ89 or the like, making it very nibble in sliding around the face. The blade tabs stick out the ends of the razor just like my Gillette Goodwill and reminds me of the 1920-1930 Gillette 3 piece heads where the blade tab exposure is pronounced. The Diamond Like Carbon coating on the 2 piece head is slick and feels solid. It also cleans up much easier and resists or repels soap scum build up much more than my chrome or nickel plated razors. That was a surprise. The Shave The Weber turned out to be a bit more aggressive than I anticipated, but I should have known that by the blade exposure. I would put it in the same league as maybe a NEW short comb or a notch down from a Fatip. It took me a minute to get the blade angle correct. I'm not sure why that is just yet, but I suspect it has to do with the head design. As I mentioned before, the razor has no problems zipping around the lather. The DLC coating (which I read is slicker than Teflon) didn't drag or feel odd in any way. I never noticed it for good or bad reasons. The razor excelled for me at hard to reach tight spots such as under the jaw line. Again, a very nimble shaver. Overall, a very good razor and for $55 for a solid SS, you can't go wrong. Please let me know if you have any questions. Here are some pics. All shots taken with BRW "Slim" handle which is great for this razor. Sorry for pic qualities as it's late and lighting is not great.
