My wife went to Sallys Beauty supply today and came home with one of these little things....anyone ever used one or anything? I know its a little cheapy but id actually been wanting one and low and behold the wifey brings one home....she brought it home to me to make up for not lettin me buy a 35 dollar brush this past weekend at a store lol...she knows the marvy is no comparison to what i was wanting but its definately nice to have a wife who at least tries to support my habbit of excessive collecting of shaving gear lol....this is why I love her!! But none the less Iv wanted this brush for a while and was wondering who has had any experience with it good or bad....some of you might not understand my wanting of cheap shaving gear but I figure I otta try it all before I knock it...
Marvy is legendary for its barber poles and Mr. Marvy himself was a real character, started selling barber supplies as a 12 year old. I've actually called the company and talked with their technician about barber pole repair and dating and they were magnificent , excellent to deal with. Their retail products are like this brush Chinese products or Italian made Omega brushes rebranded Marvy. The Omega brushes are excellent but sometimes are priced higher than Omega boars elsewhere. Sorry to say with your brush its not good for use , no one in the history of actual shaving has ever said a kind word about it, its best as just a display item . They are inexpensive so nothing really lost. One really inexpensive boar is the Omega 20107 Professional Boar brush ,its $10 from most vendors and they work well for a little. I bought 2 and once broken in they are really nice everyday brushes for soap or cream. Another good Marvy product is the Green Rubber shaving mug, its usually about $10 and for soaps as it has a ring at the bottom to keep the soap in place, it was developed for barbering way back when , its sturdy and h ighly functional, just not wetshaving beautiful.
Why don't you try it and let us know how you like it, Brett? I've personally never read/heard every word ever written/spoken in shaving history, so who knows, it may just be a great brush to some folks! Either way, your wife gets a big round of applause!
Ahhh yes ive just got up and read your post straight after, (maybe another coffee is in order for me) Cheers for that
If it's the Marvy Eterna (the only Marvy brush I saw on Sally's website, but not necessarily the only one they carry in-store), it has mixed reviews on Amazon. edit; conversation seems to have changed a bit while I was typing.
I just looked on uk sites and not much on it, although not many people stock it over this way, But the Eterna does look nice
Hopefully, Brett got a good one, and if not maybe a re-knot is in order. Since it was a lovely, thoughtful gift from his wife.
Shawna absolutely loves her Marvy re-branded Omega Pro-Boar and Green Marvy Mug. That mug is so good, I grabbed a green mug myself in a trade with Keith. I swear that thing is nearly indestructible.
Even if the brush is useless as it is, the handle looks nice and would make a good candidate for a TGN reknot.
I think I may be with Hanzo on this one. I will buy nearly anything shave related and have walked by every one of these I have seen. There handle is a 3 piece plastic job that is crookedly glued in place. The box generally has more bristle in and around it than the brush has. The sentiment is great though but the brush is pretty bad in all quality respects IMO. A buddy I turned onto TWS at work's wife got one for him as his first brush and it sucked. He got a Vulfix 404 as a replacement and hasn't looked back. So here is what I'd do: use it for all it is worth. It is either going to prove many of us wrong or it'll fall apart rather quickly. In either case, love that your wife got you a toy unprompted and enjoy it!
Thanks you guys for all your replies....im definately stoked that she got it for me and im glad that im going to get to use it....however I dont know whenever that will be....she made me put itin my stocking lol so I must wait til xmas.....I will be getting that and another brush (not sure which one she got me but I got a feelin its a col.conk badger with a beechwood handle lol) so whichever I try first which may be the marvy since im so curious ill post my results asap...if it does happen to fall apart i will be interested in a reknot.....I like the marvy handle mine does not SEEM to be crooked but I have yet to take it out of the box so nobody knows lol.....if its not and it falls aprt.....ill order a brand new badger knot and slam it in that bad boy...an probably same for my burma brush....its a decent little brush but it sheds a few bristles each time i shave...not a lot like expected....so ill reknot it with a boar bristle probably.....and I may even reknot the marvy to its original state as a boar.....who knows.
Ill post a picture asap.....and I may even post a video of me using it...cant promise the video but I might be able to as long as I can find our flip camera.
If it is the same dimensions on the knot as the Burma Shave brush that is Chinese made, you can slip a nice 20mm TGN knot or expand it like I did my Burma Shave to 23mm and slip in the synthetic knot from TGN. Any way you go you win.
Hoooooo! TGN Synthetic! Hekes yesssss! BG is the only one around here with a TGN Synthetic since I gave mine away... truly a great brush the TGN Synthetic is! Ooooh! I have a spare Ever Ready Greenie in a box.... friggin schweet! A present to me from me, YAY!
Bumping this thread a bit for an update...today I took the knot out of my Marvy brush......I plan to reknot it and since I like heavier brushes I epoxy'd in some stainless steel nuts to give it some good weight.....its gonna look good once I can afford a knot!
What is your overall impression pre-teardown? I'm guessing it left you wanting or else you wouldn't have had to reknot it so soon. BTW, if you take some sandpaper and wrap it around a deepwell socket just a smidge smaller than the hole the knot came out of, you can gradually make the hole bigger with relative ease and then drop a bigger knot in it. I kinda like the idea of that....some huge luxurious knot in a Marvy handle. Makes one wonder.....
Well I used the brush maybe 5 or 6 times......my thoughts are as follows.......1.Awesome handle yet too light......2.Too small of knot......3.I honestly might as well try lathering with one of those old style corn husk brooms because it would not whip up much lather. The handle though IMO is an awesome looking handle and with the weight mine now has.....it deserves a bad ass badger knot....itl be a while before I will be able to get my main responsibilities taken care of before I can buy a new knot .....but none the less it will be done sometime! Thanks for the advice on the sandpaper.....I will probably do that!
