I was just starting to relearn how to classic shave I used a Feather Blade. Being a newbie the results were less then stellar. I blamed the blade and not my technique. As a result I had never used a Feather blade again. My Secret Santa. included a pack of Feathers with my gift. Today was blade changing day and I also choose to change razors.Today I choose a Feather blade, an old style Gillette Open Comb. Flashbacks of the first encounter with a Feather raced through my mind. The evil thoughts of the Feather dissolved. as the razor just skated across my face mowing down whiskers. I did three passes with no irritation, no nicks. The Feather delivered an exemplary shave this morning. My advice to newbies wait awhile before using a Feather blade, master your technique first. You will be rewarded with a great shave from a great blade.
Good advice Brad. Many newbs want the best, from the beginning only to find out the best can bite you if you don't know what you're doing with it.
I disagree. I have maybe 20 shaves under my belt. My first shave was with a feather and have all been with the exception of one that was with a Derby. I've had fantastic results with feather!
I've experienced the other end. I have several hundred shaves under my belt and Feathers are still less than friendly for me. I can use almost every other blade including Merkurs and Feathers still cut me to ribbons even when I'm careful. I'm glad so many people find them perfect and I wish that I did too but it just don't work that way with my face and Feathers.
I have quite a few DE shaves but none with a quality razor and blades (Initially it always started with what you could pick up in a local drug store and the uber cheap Wilkinson Sword blades for $1.00 per pack), Feathers did a number on my face the first few shaves, but as my technique improves I find them being much better as time goes on.
Good advice (although a bit difficult to read in the green text). I, too, have tried Feathers, only to move on to a less expensive blade that works better for me. Cheers to those who use 'em and love 'em.
Well, the cheap Wally World Wilkies work well for me. Derby works better. I"ll be trying a Feather again soon. My last Derby out of the 5 pack was on it's last shave. I didn't feel like dragging out the stash, so I popped in a Feather that was in the medicine cabinet. I may have to dial it down to 4, instead of my normal 6.
I was reminded tonight of why I dislike Feather blades so much. I don't know why they feel they must use 2 gallons, 1 gallon for each dot, of glue/wax on each blade to hold the wrapper in place.
Oh, come on, MAN! Let's not get carried away with the exaggerations!! They only use a gallon and a half for both dots!
Other than the glue problem, they worked well for me but I have now settled on Gillette 7 O'Clock Blues for my DE shaves. I will say this, if you want to get rid of a mole, the Feather blade is the sure way to do it. OUCH!
Feathers. Love'em or hate'em, no in between. Personally, I love'em, but only in mild razors like a Tech. In an aggressive razor, like my open comb Gillette, NO WAY! That's what the Wally-Werld Wilkinsons are for. And a year ago when I got back to shaving the way I did 60 years ago, I wasn't fond of the Feathers. I had to get technique down and find that different razors like different blades and, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, different faces take different razors. Try 'em all out. You'll find if Feathers or something else or another method, SE, STR8 or what. It does take some time to find the right combo.
I'm a blade/razor combo guy - Feathers work great in some razors where others don't. I always keep some Feathers on hand if other blades are not working. For example with my Eclipse Red Ring I was wondering what all the fuss was about - until I slipped a Feather in. Completely different shaving experience. So once you have technique down pat make sure you at least give a Feather a go with a razor that is not giving you any joy!
