I recently purchased Mama Bear Lime Ice and Ye Olde Barber Shoppe Shaving Soaps, and really love them both. While I have never really been fan of non-tallow soaps, these load very easily and bowl or face lather like a champ. The lather is also very slick and stable. I think I can finally say a good soap - is a good soap, regardless of whether it contains tallow. Has anyone else had a similar experience using Mama Bear shaving soap?
I had some Irish Tweed from Mama Bear and I agree, it's a fine soap but was too heavily scented for me. I don't get hung up on tallow because............................. I definitely agree.
I use everything with good effect. Triple milled tallow, melt and pour, triple milled veggie, and creams all work for me. I'll find out about Italian soft soap next week when I try my Cella.
I love my Mama Bear soaps, as i love my TSD soaps. Along with VDH they are my favorite melt and pour products. I agree with you, a good soap is a good soap!
Ye Olde Barber Shop = Awesomeness!!! I love that scent! Just got it this Christmas from my TSD Secret Santa. Very good performer. I find them close to TSD soaps, but I think TSD's overall out perform. I feel they are a little slicker, my lather seems thicker and I usually don't have to reload my brush to finish my head. With MB, I just can't seem to keep enough lather in my brush to finish the job and have to hit the puck again.
I purchased TSD English Fern, and, while I truly loved the scent, something in it burned my skin every time I used it. It made a nice lather, but I was afraid to try other TSD varieties in case the skin burning came from something in the soap formulation, rather than the fragrance and/or essential oils. Anyway, would use it if I could! Many great shaves!
I'm sorry to hear you had a problem with the soap. I recall you mentioning in our PMs how much you liked the soap. And the other soap you bought? Any problems from that one?
I forgot about the other soap I think it is Iced Sub Zero, and it must have been pushed to the very back of my linen closet. I am out of town, but will try it when I get home on Saturday. I will report back with a post on my Saturday Shave. Hopefully, it will be a pleasure. By the way, what causes a soap to burn the skin? I have found some others that cause the same burning sensation, and would like to delineate the ingredient, if at all possible.
Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood, Kell's Juniper Sage, C&E Sandalwood, and even though it is not a soap, AOS Sandalwood shave cream. Some others burn just a little, but if I can get with using them if I bowl lather. Provence Sante Green Tea is in that category. I bolw lather that one because I love the scent. It just seems strange because I can successfully use Tabac soap, which is very scented and LaToja soap stick, which also has a very prominent scent. And I use MWF a couple times per week, so it appears certain fragrances and ingredients irritate and others do not. Any ideas? And to answer your earlier question, the face burning wasn't there at the beginning, I noticed it after I started getting away from creams and using a lot of new soaps.
Other than Kell's, those all have sandalwood, and so does my English Fern. Kell's might, but I didn't see it lasted as a fragrance note. SubZero doesn't have sandalwood, btw.
i just ordered some cannabis scented shave soap from mamma bears site...cant wait to try it....the description says it smells like a fresh marijuana plant...to me...it is a great scent...i will post when it arrives to let others know how my experience went with her soaps
Returned from Philly last night and located my TSD Iced Sub Zero in the linen closet, as suspected. Knocked out a wonderful shave this morning with TSD Iced Sub Zero, Jack Black Beard Lube, Osage Rub and a Merkur Slant Bar loaded with a Voskhod. The shave was smooth, irritation free and enjoyable. I can definitely rule out ISZ from the sources of irritation. The sandalwood ingredient appears to the culprit. For some reason I am able to use Trumpers Sandalwood Skin Food without issue. Nonetheless, Thanks to the Queen of Blades I need not worry about using any more soaps that cause my skin to burn, and I can truly enjoy the cold blast of ISZ. Too bad I can't use the English Fern because the scent is awesome! Never figured out what is causing the skin burning from the Kell's Juniper Sage, but if my skin doesn't tolerate Sandalwood, it is likely other fragrance or essentials will have a similar affect on it. I seem to do well with flowery scents, so maybe I can keep that in mind the next time I'm in the purchasing mode!
Try the Mama Bears Awakenings, nice and chilly. You can also go with TSD Tea Tree 2X. Love them both.
You had ISZ soap for how long without trying it? I can give you the names of some outstanding mental health providers if you PM me. If you can still get Cracklin' Firewood (any Sandalwood in that Johanna?) It is fantabulous. Stuart, if you have any of that English Fern you can't use-I'm in possession of a Merkur Futur I would swap for it
I've been using MamaBears Spellbound Woods shave stick while traveling. great lather, love the scent.
Intersting idea, but be aware of the side effects. Maybe it is not only smells like cannabis ... . Interesting, if they put it for the international delivery, I wonder about how dogs and guys at customs will like it...
