I purchased a Rools Razor this week. It arrived on tuesday. Complete with two spare blades. Good condition, but unused for some time. I cleaned it on wednesday and thursday, relubricated it yesterday (many thanks to Gregindallas' great post!). Honed it, stropped it.

This morning I was eager to try it, though a bit fearful as well since it is described as a str8 on a stick. I had only used a DE up to now and twice a Gem some weeks ago, but with wrong SE blades - from the local store. Now I don't have a heavy beard growth, so I thought it would not be too hard. And if it got too rough, I could always stop and resharpen it, since it is weekend.

I did a thourough prep: Give the blade some 30 seconds of strop, face wash with hot water, building a nice lather (DVH soap block) a bit wetter than usual for a good moist shave.

First pass. WTG. Short, light strokes. Smooth.
    Splash, relather.
Second pass. XTG A wee bit of tugging here and there. Should I dare ATG?
Splash. Starts to feel good. Relather.
Third pass. Yep. ATG. Smooth on the cheeks, little bit rough on the neck. Difficult to do the tip of the chin. No flat surfaces there. So: really short strokes. And careful under the nose.
Splash, needs a bit more here and there. So relather.
Fourth pass. Careful on the neck! Don't let it get too rough.
Splash, Feel. A few minor spots left.
    Touch up here and there.
Rinse with cold water. Dip dry.
Clean brush, clean, dry and strop blade.

    Now a good checkup.

    Wow.

If that isn't BBS I don't know what is.

So here I am. Grinning ear to ear. Can't stop checking my chin. Smooooth!
    Feels great.

Since the neck was a bit rough to shave I guiess I'll have a bit more honing / stropping to do.
Better check out the two spare blades as well. Then I can rotate them. One day of work, two days of rest. Why isn't every job like that?

Anyway, I just wanted to brag a little. Tomorrow the next blade.

Have an nice day and smooth shaves y'all!

    Mike

Ok,why do I do this to myself? Every day I grab the Feather AS-D1 and argue with it to give me a DFS. It's like a battle sometimes. New blade 2 to 3 passes and a touch up for a DFS.
This morning I get up and don't feel like a battle so I grab the Gillette FatBoy out of the cabinet, slap a new shark super chrome in it ,grab the Proraso white and my trusty Omega badger and go.....1 yes 1!! pass and a quick touch up and BAM!!!!! BBS shave.
Ya know......I'm almost thinking "sell the Feather AS on Ebay and spend the coin on 1 of the fatboys" I think I just might!

Pre-shave soap: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
    Razor: Merkur Futur
    Blade: Rapira Swedish Supersteel
    Brush: Simpson Colonel X2L Best
Soap or Cream: TOBS Avocado Cream
A/S: Dickinson's Witch Hazel, Realm Balm

A fine shave on this cold and snowy morning! The Realm balm has good protective properties; it isn't my favorite balm, mainly because I don't really care for its scent, but it provided a nice finish today.

Once again a truism is "discovered." Many of us collect razors, but when push comes to shove, there is one or two razors per class (DE/SE/Injector) that a user will come back and use most often. In DEs for me it is the Slim, in Injectors for me it is my Schick Dial or my J series injector. Those two give me the best, most consistent shaves. My usage is about 50% with the Slim 15% with the two injectors and the rest to all the other razors in the collection. Most vintage users will have a least one backup for their most used razor in case something happens. I have backups of my Slim just in case.

    Good fortune.

It just seems I get a better, closer. more comfortable shave from the "old school" razors. No offense to the manufacturers of the new razors intended but "they just dont make'em like they used to" comes to mind.
The Feather is a fantastic razor, It just does'nt work for my face.
Maybe if they'd change the base plate with 1 that can increase the agressiveness of the razor it would have a place in my den. But as is, It's just not ment to be:(

I looked out the window and it was grey and white, cold and snowy, bora-bora its not.

    14 January Saturday
    Proraso preshave blam
    Palmolive stick
    Omega travel boar, face lather
Gillette Slime (7), w/ Rapira Platinum Lux (D1)
    Alcolado Glacial and Nivea ASB

Gotta say, the first two passes were spectacular, then my Kharma ran out of gas. The third pass gave me three weepers and an actual cut on the chin, what a mess, guess I got sloppy. This was the first time I tried a Rapira with the Gillette Slim, and I think I got sloppy after looking at the clock and I realized I was starting to run out of time. We will revist this blade and razor combo next week to see how I works. Oh well, a three pass, what the hell was I thinking kind of shave. At least I smell nice. Now to get to the airport and go home.

My first hotel bathroom picture of the year and I forgot my duckies, what was I thinking.

What I'm considering my first real DE shave .. this morning, Saturday 1/14/2012.

Tunes - Bloody Kisses, Type O Negative
Prep - hot towel on face, soak brush and soap
Blade - Merkur (came with the razor)
    Razor - Merkur HD 34C
    Soap - Williams Mug
    Brush - Kent VS80
Post - cold water rinse, Gillette AS gel

I let my beard grow a bit this week so I could try and map it's growth, which I'm still having some trouble with, but I have a pretty good idea. I couldn;t wait to shave so I went for it anyway LOL. I managed to work up a pretty decent lather after watching some videos online. I didn't use a bowl, just my hand and it seemed to work fine. I did 3.25 passes, 2 WTG, 1 XTG and a few touch up spots. Re-lathering between each pass. Making sure to concentrate on technique. No nicks or cuts at all, no blood whatsoever :) I wouldn't consider it the best shave as I missed a few spots, even after some touching up. What I would consider it is a massive step in the right direction for what I'm looking for - no more irritated, red, bumpy, burning neck. I can't wait to try out some more products; blade sampler pack is on the way, and I'm hoping to shop for some cream/prep/AS stuff on my business trip this week :)

    My beginner setup ...
