First shave with a Derby this morning. Didn't do to bad, until I attempted to go ATG. That was not fun and it was nothing but tugging and pain, stopped immediately. Maybe it was the Arko Stick that I was using, wasn't providing the slick/cushion I needed. Seemed to go fine last week with a Shark blade and Proraso cream. Oh well, no BBS for me this morning, still a DFS.
When you change 2 things at once, it is hard to know what caused the problem. Maybe you should try a Derby blade again, but with the Proraso cream.
i havnt had much luck with derby blades yet, i dont think i will give up on them right away but i will deffinatly give them a shot again
, nothing but tugging from a Derby for me. I think I'd rather pluck out my stubble than shave with a Derby!
I am just starting to work my way through a variety pack of blades and the first I've used has been the Derby. I have gotten what I consider to be good results so far, and if I didn't have a variety pack I'd have no problems continuing to shave with these blades. As it is though, I am looking forward to trying some different blades out to see how much better it can get! This morning I did a 4-pass shave (WTG, XG, ATG, ATG) with the Derby blade and came away with a DFS with a couple of missed spots at my jaw line and no skin irritation.
When I write concerning my positive experiences with Derby's I usually receive more negative comments that on any other issue. I know that each face is different and each blade will react differently to them. But I also know that each razor is different and works differently with different blades. I use the Derby's with razors that I know will respond well to them. These are usually non one piece razors of older vintage. The exception being the Merkur Futur that works well with everything for me. I also only use my blade once.
Yeh Derbys get trashed alot. But for me they are just usable ,not great but not bad.For me I find shave #2 the best shave on the blade.
That is what it felt like. I nearly let out a yelp when I started. I'm going to give the same blade another go for my next shave just to be sure. I have lots of different blades thanks to a large sample pack I bought. So I'll just move on.
If you have another Derby you could always try another blade as it could just be a bad blade. It happens occasionally. Maybe start your shave with the Day-2 Derby and if it's still rough then you can try a fresh Derby to finish the shave.
Which Derby blades are these, the ones with the writing lengthwise across the pack or with the writing across the top? There were reports on some of the shave forums that the former were quite good, but the latter much less so.
Mine have the writing lengthwise on the pack, like the first link in your post. I also have 3 or 4 packs of blades that are all made by the same company, with the same name on them (Big Ben Super Stainless), but the packaging is different colors on each pack...
For me Derbys are not necessarily bad, just different. They definitely require technique adjustments, and for me do better in hefty razors like the Slim or Fatboy. I never go ATG on the neck with a Derby, just one or 2 extra WTG and XTG there. I used Derbys almost exclusively for over a year and did OK with them. I never thought less of them until I discovered many better choices.
Is this true?? For all of the time that I've used these I've never thought about the possibility of a difference??
Alright, so shaved again this morning with the same Derby, but with Proraso cream. It was MUCH better. Got a BBS without any problems. I think the Proraso cream really was the difference. The Arko stick didn't give me the cushion or glide that the Proraso does.
