Hi Everyone, A friend of mine picked up a Gillette Tech razors for $39.99 on the Bay from a seller that is located in the US. The packaging looks legit and somewhat old (mid 70’s) – in the blue blister pack with the Gillette blade that comes with it. It was sold as new and it does look it. Nowhere on the razor does it say Gillette but on the underside it says made in England. The razor feels light – made of aluminum my guess - I am just wondering if it is the real thing. Any comments. Thanks in advance.
This is from Mr. Razor's site. These were made in the U.S., England, Argentina, India and a few other countries from 1938 to the early 1980s. This is one example. So if it looks somewhat like this...
I have one but it has the nickel covered brass handle. The English Techs are a bit more aggressive than the American Tech (not sure of the others) and it really will throw a nice shave on your face.
It's a very interesting razor. I have a 1963 English Tech which liiks very similar. It has an aluminum handle and gives a great shave with a feather or Astra blade. Barry
Purchased a couple of them off the bay, along with other's just like them, except they had the logo on top. Polished them up, 2 wtg north to south passes with some buffing/pasting, and I get a DFS every time. Have 4 total and I'm trying to keep just to those four.
It's a boring ball-end Tech. Over $5 is nuts. They were in every supermarket however many years ago for $1. I really don't understand the packaging craze and paying more for a advertising. Anyone buying this stuff mint stuff expects to sell it at some point and the likihood of making their money back is not very good.
Not if you open the package anyway, and to me the only thing worse to me than paying $40 for a relatively mundane razor is paying that much for a razor I can't use, but I don't collect things for display purposes, some people like to collect things in mint or NOS condition and display them, and if that's your thing, then you gotta be prepared to pay more for the relative rarity of a NOS, or NIP item. I do get the coolness of it. It's like opening a time capsule when you find something like that. I appreciate that there are still rare examples like that out there, but it's just not my thing. I'd be so tempted to pretend I'm walking out of a drug store in 1966 and rip open the package as soon as I get it home, but if you did that, this $40 item would instantly depreciate to a $10 item. So instead if I find something like that I will resell it to someone who will appreciate and preserve it's NIPness, and I will buy a decent used example for myself.
I did both. The temptation was getting too much. I have a 1947 milord nos gift set, so when I found a 1946 milord for $5 +shipping, I got it. The 58 years of obviously heavy use makes me appreciate my perfect one all the more. The build quality on older gillettes (pre 50's) is amazing compared to even a nineteen-sixty's super speed.
