Excellent!! I'm glad you found a combo that works for you. That's the beauty of this hobby; one man's trash is another man's treasure. Plus there is so much to try and so many combinations, you need to celebrate when you find that special match that makes your shave one to remember.

I'm still don't think the Derby's are my blade. I'm just happy I was able to get a decent shave from one. The Sharks are my leader right now. Though I've only tried three types. I have another 46 or so to go from my sampler pack. :D

I've had just the opposite luck...Derby better - Shark not so better.

It's funny how everyone's skin is so different. They're biologically the same cells and all.

Derb's used to be my go to blade. When I was a true Newb. But my preferences are always changing. It's been a while since I last used them. I think I'll bust open a pack, slam it into a Tech and experience the magic that got me hooked on d/e. I wonder if the shave will be as good as I remember it was. Hmmmm?

See this thread. There were quite a few similar threads on the various forums, so there is obviously some difference.

I have used the Derby Extras with the lengthwise writing and found them to give very smooth, close, irritation-free shave in a Merkur 34C. In an Edwin Jagger DE89L, they also gave smooth shaves but with plenty of irritation. I have not tried the Derby's with the writing across the top yet, and so am not sure how well they work for me.

The current pack that I'm using is 'across the top' . No problems.

I love Derby blades. They work best for me.
Also love my Proraso soap in the green tub.
Want to buy some Proraso cream, but I need to work my way through Indian shave creams before I buy any more.

Interesting you'd say that. Tried some Godrej shaving soap this morning. Was a nice surprise. Lathered well, a nice hard soap. A round Should last a long time. The one that I have is a light blue color, not sure if they have more than one style.

I have been having very good success with the Derby blades. Shave after shave was just as smooth and comfortable as possible until....I changed my shaving soap. I ordered a sampler pack from T&H and began trying out the different creams they sent me. When I got to one of them, it did not feel too slick on my face. I ignored this and continued with my shave. I ended up with three weepers and a very sore face. I could not believe it was the blade. After changing the blade and went on to finish shaving, I noticed the blade was feeling very rough. I figured then that something else was going on. I realized the cream I was using was not giving me a good slick lather to protect my face. After the next day, I went back to my usual cream. Lathered up and went with my usual Derby that only had one shave on it so far. The shave was so smooth again. I had to know for sure so I took out the spent blade that I had deposited in the blade bank and gave it another try. already having two shaves on the blade, this blade was giving me a super shave once again. That is when I realized that soap and cream does matter to the shave.
Not bashing the T&H cream, it was just not for me. The other samples were not bad, but not exactly to my liking so I stay with the few that feel good to me.
The Derby Blades are still my favorite blades to go to so far, and I have tried many different brands so far. I do like many others, but I have to admit that Derby is doing it for me right now.

  12. Hiya,

Crazy thing about the Derby blade. Recently tried one again after a four year wait from the first time. Yeah, I'd been meaning to give em a shot again after all the posts about the performance (all over the board). Some people liked em, and many people didn't.

Loaded one in my go to razor and sent it on the first downward neck stroke. Ok......not bad. Gave it a couple more strokes and it wasn't awful. Just felt like a medium sharp blade.......that's it!

Then I switched sides and did a last few WTG strokes on my neck, and hmmmm. Is that my imagination here? Relathered and did my XTG pass and man.........this one side is messed up. Even switched around the blade in the razor to make sure and yep....a rough ride compared to the other side. Dud city baby!

Based on my experience, I'd have to give the blade 'mixed' reviews.

I am in the minority, but Derby's are my go to blade. I get the best most comfortable shaves with them and they last 4-5 shaves for me. YMMV

So far, I agree with you but I've only tried 2 different blades. The first blade I tried was a Derby, and this morning I switched to Rainbow. Definitely prefer to Derby to the Rainbow. I'm not 100% sold on Derby yet as I think there has to be something better, but I can get a nice shave with no irritation or pulling at all with them, adn they do last for a solid week for me only taking one day off from shaving.

I see mixed reviews of these blades, not sure I want to try them.

Considering they are only a couple dollars a pack, and so widely available online, I would suggest trying them.
No need in going out of your way to get some for testing, but if you're already placing an order adding a pack is worth the gamble, IMO.
Heck, some vendors toss in a pack when you buy a razor.

Derby blades have two camps like and extreme dislike, there is no middle ground. I use them have found that you need a slick soap to have them produce a good shave.

From memory just before the last time that I switched to keeping a short beard people were complaining that Derbys had been changed to the worse, So maybe the reviews might depend on when a batch was made.

Different blades work differently with different razors & soaps/creams. Most of my razors and face-lubes work great with Derby.
Sharks work great with some/not great with others.
