This is the same soap my grandfather taught me how to shave with. I guess this why I still love this stuff. It brings back fond memories of a man I loved so much! He was a old fashion barber and raised me in the "old school" using that strop on my behind besides the razor . Anyways I have read gents having bad luck working this stuff up in a lather. It took me reading many post and several tries but I am one of those who can get a really good lather from the $1 puck of Williams! It has a clean smell and for those of us that really are switching to wet shaving to save money (hahaha) it is cheap enough. Let me hear your opinions!!!!!!!
Vintage Williams is one of favorite soaps of all time. Difficult for me to figure out why the formula was changed although I'm sure it had to do with the bottom line. I tried Modern Williams once....ONCE. Great story about your grandfather. I like stuff like that
Hated Williams, learned to lather Williams, liked Williams, defended Williams , became indifferent to Williams. My only problems with Williams was it tended to dry on my face and it was not as protective as I like, in that department VDH for just a dollar more beats it.rI actually like vintage Williams a lot and have been using it regularly for a over a month, nice old fashioned tallow soap.
Thank you! He was a great man. He would be tickled pink to know I was back to wet shaving again. Bottom dollar always seems to out weigh the quality. A shame.
I use Williams more than any other of the soaps I own. Probably about a 50/50 split between the modern version and the various vintage pucks I've acquired.
Howdy! I'm using Williams with a warm water scuttle. I add a couple of drops of glycerin to the scuttle and begin lathering. I have found that you have to work a bit to get a good lather, but I don't mind. I will try other soaps and creams in the future. However, for a low cost way of shaving, Williams is hard to beat. Always, Gene
I still have pucks of modern Williams kicking around. I couldn't lather it decently for some time however a revisit a short while back and BAM - instantly into my rotation. I haven't tried the vintage yet but have no real complaints about the modern.
I won't even wash the dog with the modern stuff but I do enjoy the vintage quite a bit. Tried everything with the modern, different brushes, hot water, cold water, soaking the puck, bottled water.....never could get it to lather like I like and get much easier with other soaps. I am glad that you like it though
$1 for a pick of Williams??? Does it lather itself? I built my stash of Williams @ $0.59 each. Thank you Kroger!
I find modern Williams okay but the vintage to be much better.Awhile ago I found my dads old shaving mug with a puck of vintage Williams. But my cheap soap of choice is the Arko stick and also now the Derby stick.
I'm not a big fan. I don't like the skeeter-be-gone smell and honestly I don't think it lathers that well on a consistent basis. I've had more bad lathers than good. Lot's of folks 'round here do like it, though, at least judging by this thread.
Williams is the very first soap I ever used when I took to the shaving brush so many years ago. Not sure what formula that one was.. I like the look of the mug on the box ..good story Zilla thanks for posting...
Nothing wrong with any of the Williams. It has plenty of glide, but is a little light on the cushion. I don't notice the scent any more.
Not at all a fan of the modern stuff, but the vintage puck I have is wonderful. The scent and extra time and effort required for a good lather (for me anyway) from the modern puck aren't worth the low cost to me. I'm not making a big effort to find vintage pucks, but if I run across another at a reasonable price I'd certainly buy it.
I like Williams but haven't used it lately, because I have a huge stock of soap/ cream. I'm also a fan of Colgate.
I always used to say that the Williams tag line should be, "Williams, it's NOT Colgate," because Colgate sucked more than Williams. Then I tried Caswell Massey...
I like Williams, but not as much as VDH. I have tried several different creams and a couple of different soaps and always go back to VDH. I use the Williams when I want a challenge. You have to spend more time to get the lather right, but for the nostalgia, it's worth it.
