Friend of mine on Facebook mentioned the town a year or so ago, been on the list of "places I'd definitely go to if ever I got rich and traveled" ever since

    The kitteh always wins.

Just keep in mind E85 is about 30% less energy dense than pure gasoline, so it's probably not as inexpensive as it looks.

right. If I remember right, it may also cause engine damage. Back in the 80s our family van broke down due to some sort of additive in the gas. I seem to remember that it was ethanol. The van was a 77 ford econoline. Whatever it was, it dissolved several essential parts in the engine and stranded us on the Westbank of N.O.

I would wager it's a non-issue for most people driving vehicles nowadays. Most vehicles, even the non-flex-fuel ones, are designed to run with some ethanol in the fuel since ethanol's been pretty widely used as an additive in gasoline since the eighties. Most guys I've known that have had issues with ethanol are the ones that own classic cars.

All I know is that since I stopped using the corn gas, my check engine light went OFF and has not come back on. And a fill-up lasts me about 7 days instead of 4 days. That's in my 2004 Pontiac Grand Am SE.

Cars made from the mid 80's and later are all made to take up to 10% ethanol (exact year varies by manufacturer). You really do need a flex fuel vehicle to use E85 since the differences in combustion temperature will damage exhaust systems and the E85 will slowly dissolve fuel lines if they aren't made for the E85. Kits have been made for doing conversions for E85, but there is some debate regarding the long-term effects of using them (they also void any warranty).

SO, you're right and now you know why.

You may have a problem with something in your exhaust system. The slightly higher combustion temperature of E10, the normal gas with ethanol, can show exhaust issues to show up earlier. It could also be the exhaust temperature sensor being set very sensitive and thinking you're not getting complete combustion in the engine and having hot exhaust do to final combustion in the Catalytic converter. If that's the case, while not a real problem it would be cheaper to just avoid the E10 so you know if something actually goes wrong.

I'm such a geek - guess that comes with the Chemical Engineering degree.

I'm well aware of that. All the same, I've heard my fair share of speculation that the issue of fuel lines and gaskets dissolving is a bit overblown, and some that's it's underplayed. That said, don't read this or my previous statement as an endorsement to go and stick E85 in your car if it wasn't specifically designed to do so.

The sensors on those Grand AMs tend to be rather touchy from my experience. I have a 2003 Grand AM SE myself.

Would you come by and tell that to my wife? Doesn't have to be about this topic. In fact, it would work better if you just phrased it as a general statement of fact. ;)

I wish I could. But I'll definitely avoid the E85.

I hear ya. 2002 Bonneville, and 2008 Impala here, both dropped 7-10 MPG when recently when the higher percentage corn gas got to our little corner, and I know I'm not the only one here seeing the same problem.
    Frickin' corn.
To taste so good grilled on the cob, it sure has it's major problems once the government gets involved...all the human heath issues from corn sugar high fructose corn syrup, and now power vehicles with ethanol
