LOL! Have a look at the Google maps link of Normanton in the original post and the destination of this 'highway' - Karumba. Then zoom out to this view. It is not a 'highway' to anywhere much!

It's an IDF soldier on an artillery crew. The brown in the background is the cannon's smoke mixed with the dust of the region, and the thing sticking out of his mouth is a lollipop. It's a great visual example of how one becomes accustomed to adversities and what outwardly looks like a dangerous situation, and how comfortable we can make ourselves in those times.
