Hey Everyone, all good points and warm welcomes. I'm the proud owner of an Executive. Details in a moment. Battle Monkey- I kind of started down the path of buying new, the latest and greatest, which brought me to Merkur. That research brought me to the conclusion that an old Gillette is likely as good or arguably better than any new razor on the market...Assuming that Gillette was well taken care of. In reference to the Vision, pot metal with nylon parts tells me it won't last and, IMO, isn't even comparable to an old Gillette. Regarding my new ExecutiveI think I did good. I checked my local antique haunts and a flea market to no avail. I bid $55 at the last minute for an F1 fat boy and lost. Then I saw mine on ebay for the first time with 17 seconds left listed as a "Gold Fat Boy Razor" in very good condition @ $55. I bid $65 for giggles figuring I'd run up the bid and see what it went for, but ended up winning it for $62.50 with shipping. I was a little scared frankly and my wife wasn't happy over my shoulder! Well today it arrived in the mail. Stamped D3 (Q3 '58 I believe that means) on the bottom, practically zero wear on the plating and no scratches anywhere! Doors open and close smooth and tight and each adjustmant clicks perfectly. I'm pretty happy and curious what everyone else thinks. I'll post pics after I clean it, but it looks practically new.
"VERY WELL DONE" Old School FANTASTIC SCORE and at a FAIR price The date code D3 stands for : D is for the year made 1958. 3 is for the third quarter of that year(July,August & September). You did REALLY well!!
Thanks...I've taken pics after a scrub with a tooth brush and a soak in peroxide. I'm extremely pleased with it's appearance and pumped to shave with it. I work from home and only shave for meetings...got a few days growth here and not sure what setting to start with. I'm thinking of just going at setting 4. In one of my pics I have my FT Rocket next to it (with a blade in it) that's been my daily shaver for years. Uploading pics was the intent here, but I'm not finding them on the network. Stay tuned.
Best I can seem to do...I'll have to research how to post pics properly. I use motocast which uploads every pic i take with my RAZR (the phone). Problem is they're all huge files. Opened them in paint to resize and save as .gif's
Photo bucket is free and let's you re-size files. That's what I use. Nice find, and even though it doesn't seem like a bargain, you will be able to get your money back on that razor anytime, should you ever want to sell it.
