Hello all! This is my first DE, I bought about two weeks ago from my local barber. It was only 10.95 on clearance and I got it because it was the only DE left in the shop. I've been looking for discussion on this DE but I've found none. I'm starting to get used to it (Derby Extra blades) and had my first comfortable cut-free shave today. It's probably a mild DE based on my shaves. I just ordered a Lord L6 DE just to get another mild DE for my arsenal, to experience, but I'll probably use my Doall for another month and get my technique down
On the first look it looks like an old Gillette Super Speed...At least like...The Derby blades are very good blades.I used them many times. No problems anyway.Cheap but good.Is the razor out of metal or is it plastic?!
Thanks Chief, It's metal, interesting about it looking like the Gillette Superspeed, I've not seen those yet!
I've never hear of that razor, but from what I see on the packaging " made in Korea" it may well be made made by Dorco. In any event as it looks like a Gillete Super Speed clone, and so it will probably be good to learn and practice your technique with. The Lord L6 is a well spoken of razor also...Remember you can "NEVER" have too many razors.....
Thanks Chief! I like the fact I have a Gillette Superspeed copy, or one that is similiar to a superspeed
No Problem. Maybe you could get the "Original" someday and tell us if there is a difference in shaving. That would be very interesting. And the quality...
Nice looking razor you have there. It's really cool that you were able to pick it up locally from your barber. My barber doesn't care much for traditional methods and insists that cartridges are the way to go. While I do agree carts do have their benefits, they leave many men, including myself looking for something better. Thus enters traditional shaving with a DE, SE, or a straight. Glad to have you here, hope you enjoy your journey.
Thanks J, I keep wanting that BBS someday and I feel the traditional is the best way, plus, I've always loved my Grandfathers era and the past. I remember my grandpa's brush and soap in his sink, but can't remember his razor. I also still love my Sensor Excel for nostalgia as well, I used it a long time before recently trying traditional.
It is either a Vincent or a Weishi that has been rebranded. I started with a Weishi and moved up to a variety of razors. Good fortune.
Well if your anything like my father, seeing pictures might slowly bring some of your memories back. I had a razor for like 2 weeks before my dad remembered that he had the exact razor himself. And after showing him pictures of old Gillette's he picked out a couple he'd seen his father using as a kid. I too enjoy on the nostalgia aspect of wet shaving. It's nice to take the time to slow things down in today's fast paced world.
I am so glad to have more info about my DE, I researched the razors that were mentioned and learned so much more than I did. It looks like I've done good finding a beginners DE and will be using it for quite awhile as I get my technique down! At one point I'd like to get an original Gillette SS, that would be nice!
That's a great idea there, thanks for the suggestion. I'm discovering a new hobby I never thought I'd get so interested in, nostalgia is a huge part of this interest!
Hi Leo, and welcome to TSD! Nice razor! If it's anything like a Super Speed, you've got a good razor on your hands! Happy Shavings!
Thanks for the welcome! This morning I felt more sure about the personality of this razor, I still have to learn proper technique but this razor seems forgiving as long as the angle is true!
They have one of those razors at a barber supply place here in my town too. I thought about getting it for a buddy of mine, but wasn't sure about how mild it might be or about the build quality. I have been debatting between getting my friend a Weishi or a Sabi, but I might have to go back and take a second look at this one, seeing as I can get it locally.
