I started with a Feather Popular and store branded Personna's, quickly moved to a Gillette FatBoy and a large blade sampler pack...Since that beginning I've tried over 20-30 different razors. I settled on a morning duo EJ89 and EverReady 1928....
I started my very first shave with a Merkur super and finished with a feather. Don't recommend that. Try a mild blade like a Derby or a Astra.
Merkur 34c and Shark SC. I still like the Shark blades and use them on occasion, but haven't used a HD in a few years.
Started with a Slim adjustable on 4 and Derby blades. Don't use either much anymore since I moved onto Muhle/Edwin Jagger razors. I have the 89 and the R41 and along with a vintage Merkur slant, those are the only 3 razors I use anymore, so IMO, you have a great razor coming at you and should enjoy it. As others have said, blades just need to be tried until you find the one that works with your skin best.
You've made an excellent good choice in the EJ89. My return to DE was with Feather blades in a Merkur Futur.
Started with a Merkur 30c and Feather blades. Had the same learning curve everyone does, but still a very enjoyable experience. Have tried a few other blades now (Astra and Gillette) that worked well but didn't seem to last as long. Trying some Gillette 7o'clock blades now that are working well. Hope this helps. Enjoy the new hobby!
Merkur 34C, the HD. I forget what blade I pulled out of the sample pack first. That was about five years ago. Still have and love the HD.
I started with a Parker 29L & Shark blades. Both pretty good, but I have since moved to a Gillette Black Beauty & Feathers.
I started with a EJ DE 89L. The blades I liked were Astras, the Red Isralle Personnas at first. After trying a bunch of blades I finally settled on Wilkinson Swords as my favorite.
I started with a Merkur 38C - I'd have gone with a 34 instead but I fell in love with the barber pole design it had. Too bad the handle length didn't quite suit my comfort.
I started with a '64 Slim and Willinson blades. I can still remember how close the shave was and how I couldn't stop touching my face. I use Astra greens now. 1/10th the price and wayyyyyy smoother than the Wilks. Have fun!!
a Gillette FatBoy and an assorted pack of blades. Dorco, two different Astra's, Lord and Feathers. a little over two weeks ago. In my life I've tried a half a dozen different electrics, had a hot lather machine and the first disposables, Bics in 1974 or thereabouts, and just about everything since. In my opinion disposables hit their best with the three blade options, but nothing came close (pun intended) to the shaves I get now.
In my high school days, in the middle to late 50's, I used a Slim Adjustable with Blue Blades. Returned to it about a year ago with Wilkies. Now I'm using a Schick Dial Injector with Ted Pella blades. I rotate between that, the SA, and an R89. Great shaves with all of them, but the Schick is faster because I don't have to hunt for the correct angle.
First shaving was with a plastic Bic Latter i continue with traditional tactics : my fathers TTO and an Astor blade In the 3th shave i cut myself in the left whisker very much. I was very embarrassed in the school because everybody could notice that They keep asked me "did you play swordsman with your self" ?
My first razor was the Gillette Adjustable that I still have, and keep in rotation with an R89 and Schick Dial Injector. The only blades available then were Gillette Blue Blades. It was a great day when the neighborhood drug store started to carry the new stainless steel Wilkinson Sword Blades. When I stopped using carts, a year ago last October, the only DE blades that the local Met Market carried was Wilkinson Sword. I used them in the same SA that I had in high school. Back to the future.
1971 with a Schick injector. Can't remember what kind of blades, but they were more than likely Schicks.
For me a Dovo 5/8 ebony scaled straight, then my first DE was a Edwin Jagger 89L (A gift from the GF, and yes I still have it) first DE blade was an Astra, first soap was L'Occitane cade. I have about 20 razors at the moment (But about to reduce that, as its way too many). for me the Jagger would be enough but I do like my vintage razors.
