I don't think the word "Ugly" could ever actually appear or come up when speaking about the '500' or 'Golden 500'...
It's pretty mild....but one sexy beast....definintely a contender for sleekest, prettiest razor design...just asking to do a centerfold....;)
    I mean...come on....it's so pretty it's almost silly....

BTW.....I am now an officially screaming fanatic of the Gem OC Micromatic Camp....One of the all-time greatest razor designs....and it shaves second to none.....2 pass shaves that seriously rival str8 shaves....but has the manners of an injector....extraordinary...

Is this love or just infatuation......me thinks...the real deal....:love055: ...of course the same applies to my ER 1912 & Schick Hydro-magic....each a case of true love...

I still can't get over how slick this TTO mechanism is...and it pre-dates any TTO Gillette came up with and is so much more sophisticated...It slides back and then opens....you place the blade and it closes and then slides forward pushing the blade to it optimum angle...Too Cool for School...

    YMMV

The OCMM is a fantastic razor! I really don't understand why people fear it on the outside!? (Maybe because it has straight teeth??) I love the handle design! I had a Gem 1912 once that kept slipping out of my hand, but the OCMM has that refined handle that will never let you down!

Hydro- Magic and OCMM are Beauty and the Beast

Performance - wise...they are for me the best Injector and Single Edge razors.

The 1912's and Damaskeene and I have never clicked.Might be my face or shaving technique but I get better shaves from an Ever-Ready 1914.

What makes it a Schick 500? It looks like my J type.

My favorite was the G type and then L type. Now I prefer the J and L Paul Revere. I have an I and have yet to try it. Maybe in the morning with the next to last Personna 74 blade I have.

I've been real happy with my Schick E2 Injector, using it everyday since it arrived. I'm curious how long the Chinese Schick blade will last. So far, 4 days and counting.

The razor's action feels so different in comparison with my Edwin Jagger. Even my face feels different afterward. No raw feeling at all. The razor is more aggressive depending on the angle. It is a smooth shaver all in all. I mostly get the angle correct it seems, as my face doesn't get irritation even when I touch-up ATG. The weight is so light, but I like that. Only a few times I've accidently used pressure but I didn't get blood.

I'm working on the art of the DFS, trying to avoid over doing it for BBS everyday. It's a real learning experience but this razor gets me the DFS I've been looking for!

The E series are fine razors...though too aggresive for me. Personally I find that the Chinese Schick blade will last me around 4-5 shaves. That being said I think I have harder stubble (beause 1 go with a new DE blade on 3-4 days growth with dull the blade by the end..I really don't understand).

SE razors, in general, are simply fantastic! I love how much stiffer the blade is than a DE. I'll admit, I was fairly scared to try one (SE in general), then once I did, it suddenly beame hard to choose what I would use in the morning. :S

Below is the haul our Hoosier Trooper sent me to teach me about the wonderful world of Single Edge razors....A round of applause is in order...:happy096:
    Tom\'s haul-4.jpg
The Open Comb Micromatic on the right just might be the best shaving razor my fingers have ever touched....:happy093:

I hate to make such definitive statements, but that lovely has slammed one out the park everytime I've picked her up....I consistantly get 2 pass BBS's even with no ATG passes....I knew I would dig SE razors...and everyone knows the 1912's 101 year old design still delievers fantastic shaves....Many say the 1912 is the finest razor design of all time...So no surprises there, and it did live up to those praises...But this Gem Open Comb Micromatic was the surprise shocker...This incredible little futuristic designed razor with the 'Mad Dog' reputation, that looks like an antenna'ed gizmo from the Jetson's...The surprise is....This razor is an absolute charmer, just about perfect in every way....

That is one unbelievable razor....I'll be doing an indepth review of all the razors , but I just wanted to post this now and thank Tom again for introducing me to this Sweet Shaving Young Vixen...She really does deliever shaves as close as my Shavette but as fast and easy as my Injector....

No only did Gem beat Gillette to the TTO punch, as this micromatic was designed in '29...But Gem's TTO mechanism is also more solid and sophisticated. It glides back and then opens...Then shuts and glides forward to lock the blade in it's optimum position...and all this with a smooth solid robotic motion...Too cool for school...

Now I've got to stock-pile SE Blades.....I guess I'll have a physical and get the Doctor to tell me how many years worth of SE blades I should need.........I'm afraid DE shaving has seen it's day in my shave-cave....although I'll always love my Schick H-M...DE's just can't hang with the OCMM....and when I want mild the 1912 is amazing....And I do still love Injectors aswell...Col. Schick was a genius...

Then again...maybe that 1912 is the best shaving razor I've ever touched....;)
    (To be continued....)

The OCMM is freaking amazing! Mine is a bright shiny silver (probably nickel) color. I see you found out that it is one razor that should NOT be feared, as so many claim it should be. I think I am right to say that is anyone is going to be trying an SE razor, this should deffinately be one to try, as it is so easy to use, and really the weight of it does all the shaing for you, all you have to do is hang on and enjoy the ride!

Congratulations....Thats the razor that made the Schick Injectors so popular in the U.S...My Dad started shaving with the E types before WWII and later was issued a Black handled E-type when he was in the Navy during the War...

I'm so glad you have found those DFS's...That razor is such a sweet shaver...It is agressive, but when used with the right touch it will deliever fantastic shaves...And it looks like you are dialing it in and bonding pretty quickly with it....When I was a kid in the 60's I learned on Injectors, and thats when I realized there could be a learning curve with these guys....But since I've returned to them many years later, they now seem so intuitive and natural...It looks like they are like that for you too...

I really do believe Col Schick was a genius...and he did invent a better mouse-trap...;) And I know what you mean.....my face feels different too....Better!....
