I recently saw a post from a fellow member showing off a recently Rhodium-plated vintage Gillette 'Fat Boy' and, I started to drift back to my previous urge to have a razor dipped in the black chrome option that RestoredRazors.com offers over in the UK. Does anyone have a black chrome razor? Or, has anyone seen one of these in person? I like what I am seeing but that baby food green kind of irks me and makes me hesitant. Plus, I have a couple of razors with massive plating issues that would be perfect candidates for some restoration services...but, I am in need of a little push. Here is the photograph that is used on the RestoredRazors website: What is the group consensus on black chrome? Is it durable? Is it attractive in person? Do you love yours?
I have a Fatboy off being painted black with DuraCoat. I went with DuraCoat because it has self lubricating properties and it is scratch resistant. I thought about black chrome, then remembered when I had chrome rims on my truck. I would spend 30 minute polishing them to get the water spots off.
+1 on the black showing spots and soap residue. But I had 3 different black cars at diff. times (with the same problem) so whatever floats your boat. PS I won't ever own a black car again.
I'd like to do one razor in black chrome at some point in my life. Very durable, but like above it does show spots. WW, I must see this duracoated razor when it gets back, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that!
Cool! Didn't know they could Duracoat razors. I'd only heard of it for guns. That's going to be one seriously awesome Fatboy.
I don't remember the name of the coating, but Tforc coated a bunch of razors for many of us. I have a straight and a NEW that he coated. Great stuff. He has not been around in awhile. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/got-poor-tired-razors-i-need-help-with-project.23134/
Also.....Reliable Electroplating does a black nickel finish that would probably be cheaper. When I get it back there will be picture for sure. The razor is going to be satin black with red number. I have no idea when it will be back, the price I paid the guy had a condition that he would do it when he was doing something else that color. Yeah, I work gun show sometimes there was a guy working a booth for firearm refinishing. I started talking to him and he said he has Duracoated all kinds of things if it is metal he can coat it. He does a lot of wedding rings for guys that work construction.
My jaw was on the floor for about 10 minutes as a leafed through the thread that you shared. Between the matte black 'Fat Boy' and the set of modified 'Slims' - I am really considering trying to hunt down a company to do something more dramatic than black chrome. I now realize that the sheen is where I take issue with the black chrome. Thanks for your help, friends!
There are some engine paints and enamels that you can use on razors, they have to be baked on to harden them up, but they work well. I don't recall where I saw this, but one of the forums had a pretty extensive thread about how to do this and which paints worked best.
Check out this blacked-out razor that a user just posted on Badgered and Banned: The coating on this thing is called CeraKote. No word on how it behaves during a shave, but it sure looks stealthy!
Just a reminder that regardless of what other forums may say about TSD, we will not stoop to their level. Bad mouthing other forums will not be tolerated. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread
